When looking back at this year to make sense of it, the insights come from a dark moment... We had just lost to BYU and a dejected mind was looking for hope. For me I told myself 3 things:

1. This is an elite coaching staff that "knows what good looks like"
2. This coaching staff said that they like this teams makeup and talent. Many times Pruitt said as much about the Dline... Ending his statements with something to the effect of, "they just haven't played and need experience."
3. Against GSU Darrell Taylor, Alonte Taylor, and Nigel Warrior we're the only players on D that started who had meaningful snaps. So it really was inexperienced. And against BYU, UT outplayed them by 2 tds so there was hope.

Then came Florida and I lost all hope.... BUT

If you look at the last 8 games you saw a team that was playing above it's talent level on Defense, and probably at it's talent level on offense (our offense was ranked about 55th over second half of season and played against 4 top 30 defenses).

So at the end of the season, here are my thoughts on next year...

1. With this staff, UT will be better at every position except receiver where there won't be as big of a drop-off as people think and we will pass for more yards next year and maybe OLB. And yes, I think we will be better a MLB and DB. If BK comes back then the Oline will be most improved group on team even with TS leaving. Just look at what the staff did with Emerson, Bennett, Nigel, Bumphus and others that would have been 4 year losers under Butch. This same thing will happen next year with players like Crouch, Fields, Keyton, Simmons, insert player name here.

2. 2nd year in Chaney's system. Look at UGA year 1 vs 2 in Chaney's system. Huge difference that will result in a running game breakout for Ty Chandler (yes I said Ty, not Eric Gray). Ty has the misfortune of spending his first 2 years behind miserable O lines and that has been 2 years of holes not existing and not building on the skillset of finding and hitttting the hole. Just wait and see the vision come back in year 2 with Chaney.

3. Talent. I know UT is only recruiting in the top 15 for now, but between Pruitt's evaluation ability and this staffs ability to develop players probably puts UT in the top 10 in talent.

So next year I think UT wins the games it should win especially with KY Mizz, Vandy, Ark, and SC all being pretty down next year.

Then it will pick off 1 or 2 against OU, UF, UGA, and Bama.

Where I am with you, is that I think that between (A) Tennessee’s improvement and (B) I don’t think the bottom feeders of the East improve next year, I think Tennessee should have a safe eight.

Those safe eight are the OOC cupcakes, Mizzou, Kentucky, Vandy, Arkansas and South Carolina. The best of those teams may be Kentucky. If he loses any of these games, there will be a lot of growling

However, I don’t think Tennessee takes the next step of beating Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia or Alabama.

But, hey, it’s December 2019. A long way until September 2020

For once (or at least a few times) I tend to agree with you here. I think that’s pretty feasible, but I do think we end up scaring the pants off of UGA, even if we don’t win it. That game has the potential to go down with a tight score to the very end, IMO

This. We lose one of the "should wins" then the growling will be back quickly.

Actually, most of us know what is coming; if we do go 8-4 and win the Gator/Outback/Music City Bowl to finish 9-4, the NEXT season if we don't win of the big games and finish 9-4 again, the growling will start.

I hope you're right. But if the Vols fail to live up to the predictions, I hope the "Fire Pruitt" crowd will be a little more patient than this year.
After falling so deep into the hole the past 10 years, will will have to climb out. No one can Jump out. It may be a couple years before beating
Alabama, Georgia or Florida. If we really love our team, we'll support them on the way to that goal. If not, we'll get pissed off every time they don't
measure up to the fan's expectations. Watching and Waiting for SEC glory!

I mean why not OP?...In order for this team to beat OT, UF, GA, and Al....then...…..UT HAS TO START BELIEVING THEY CAN WIN THOSE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too Long....we have doubted....then doubt turn to fear....then fear to reality...time to change our thought processes IMO!!!!!!!!!!
The ONLY way to ACHIEVE it...is to BELIEVE IT!!!! GBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s going to come down to coaching and what Pruitt and crew are truly able to do year over year. I agree 8-9 is possible next year, but going into the 2019 season our schedule was really easy, and we didn’t even know how easy it was. We all thought Mizz, SC, and Miss State were probably going to finish with better records than they did.

We basically had 8 guaranteed wins this year, 3 guaranteed losses, and one toss up with KY.
We squandered 2 of the guaranteed wins and won the toss up.

Im optimistic, 5 in a row (6 of the last 7) is an unbelievable accomplishment. Pruitt just needs to stay on the trend he’s on. Indiana will serve as a terrific heat check.

someone explain how Florida's roster is better. It's Pruitt's third year. Gators at home. Why shouldn't we win?

TN and FLA rosters are not too far apart talent wise. Gators only have a slight edge right now.

Tennessee will be very good for SEC standards On the offensive line and along the defensive front 7. The guys at these positions will be just about as good as anyone they play (at least the starters and a few of the back-ups) baring a lot of injuries. Tennessee should be at least average at QB with plenty of talented depth there as well. As has already been said, Chaney's offenses flourish in the second year. I expect alot more consistency next season no matter who is under center.

Tennessee has 4 very talented opponents next year, but you know the way football goes. One of those teams is likely to have a bad day against us. If that happens then Tennessee will certainly be good enough to steal a win against a good opponent. 9 - 3 is a very likely scenario for the Vols next year.

Yes. But that is a tall order. Says we have to beat one of OK UGA Bama and FL and not lose one we should win. We’ll see what happens.

I think 8-4 regular season and a possible bowl game win would get us to 9. I would love for us to win against one of the big four (OU, UGA, UF, Alabama), but I don't see it happening. I would just be happy to win the games were supposed to and to be competitive with those 4.

I think 9 wins is doable, 10 is too but we need some breaks to go our way.

Of the teams we beat last year, only Bowden less Kentucky has a chance of being significantly better. Vandy has to improve a little because they were awful but that doesn't mean they will win anymore games. Mizzou should score more points but their D will take a step back without Odem. SCAR will once again be trying out a new OC. The team will either rally around CWM or they will abandon him as this is his last chance to keep from getting canned.

Charlotte, Furman, Troy are all gimmie wins if we show up (not like GaSt).

Ark should be better but they now have recruits for 3 offensive systems (Bielema, Morris and Pittman). I'd assume Bielema's recruits will work fine for Pittman. Pittman will turn out to be a good coach, it is just a matter of can he get recruits to go to Fayetteville?

Georgia is still stacked with recruits. Their offense is languishing and they don't seem to have any star power at WR/TE. Frohm isn't as bad as he was made out to be this year but he was also made to look better than he was with those great WRs two seasons ago.

Florida is finally starting to recruit better. To beat them we really need to penetrate that so-so OL and get after Trask/whoever. I do believe they lose some studs on D, but then again so do we.

Alabama will have another year of heavy turnover as they lose those marquee WRs and Tua but again they are usually stacked. My guess is some more coaching turnover on the defensive side.

Oklahoma will be a tough draw but I feel they are beatable this year in a down conference. B12 teams don't play a lot of defense and score a lot. If we can contain their offense, then we can put a HURT on them. lol

We really need to finish strong recruiting!

So which is it, Florida has a worse roster, or Mullen walked into a bunch of talent?

I've lurked this board a looooong time before posting. I can remember the posts before the 2018 Gator game where 90% of this board said we matched up equally. Butch sucked, but he didn't leave a huge talent gap for teams like Florida. The notion that we need a year or two to beat the vanderbilts and mizzous to then focus on the Floridas is ridiculous. Florida is in on a fringe top-five class while we are on a fringe twenty. It's entering year three folks. Wake up

If we land Darnell Washington, we'll be kicking ass and taking names. Dude is an athletic freak and mismatch nightmare. Our defense is becoming lethal and our decent o-line next year will be more experienced. If Bailey wins the starting job, look out. This team will be formidable.
Now, if we don't get Washington and Bailey doesn't start, then yeah we'll still be a decent team probably looking at 8 wins.
