Why the State Produces few SEC Players

State produces more than you may think. Some players choose to go outside the SEC. Golden Tate and Harrison Smith went to Notre Dame; The Turner kid went to USC; Alabama has several Tennessee kids on their roster, Not sure the names or the number but there are several. The KY QB is fro Alcoa. The state produces soem very good football players. UT just needs to keep them here.

One of the reasons Fulmer was dismissed. Randall Cobb should have been offered by Tennessee first.

Good points are made in the blog - However, I believe there is more to it - I grew up in Tennessee, went school at UT and started my career there. I since moved to and now live in North Alabama where our Vols have recruited some good players. I have been a high school referee in both states . One of the major differences is organization of the football programs here. In Alabama the programs start early in the schools, with efforts and various programs through out the year that continually develops and improves the players. Weight lifting / Power lifting teams, indoor track program works with players ,etc.. Each of these educate the kids. Coaches clinics are frequent to make sure that latest information is given out. Spring practices, summer programs all are very well organized. This does not cost as much as some will think - I have been to some of the poorest counties in Alabama and they have this same type of organization. Many people volunteer their time and expertise to support these programs. Friday night football is still special in the communities. I believe this is why Alabama and Auburn are always having a good percentage of players from in state.

I will also add a bigger view and thought- for years Nebraska Cornhuskers were known for very good offensive lineman primarily all from state of Nebraska - yet how many were 4 or 5 star high school recruits? Nebraska teach and develop the players . Go look at there roster and see how many in state players they have now ? How many assistant coaches can you remember from their staff?

One last thing - sure this organization helps the elite athletes - but it is the other athletes that gain the most - good work ethics - A reason to look forward to school - (they do not make good grades - they cannot play - state rules) A positive role model for some who may have no one else. Something to do other than hanging out and getting into trouble
I welcome other thoughts

Hound Dog. . . Part 2 will go indepth on instate structure(s) and development. This question gets ask alot and there is no single answer. I divided it up since Part 1 covers a number of charts and statistics.

Additionally, the blog is in no way intended to be negative. But it comes up so often and it can be a sensitive issue to talk about. Obviously coaching staffs are aware of the numbers; the fans, not so much. I believe THIS staff will be more diligent in evaluating in-state talent and keeping them home..

Child please. The Mo state 100m dash champ in the early 80's was a white guy. He ended up playing wr for KSt. He ran a 4.3. Go wax yourself.

Blacks are better athletes than whites. Is that true or not? Why are some of you all having a hard time with this?

The same reason some would have a hard time if it was said that whites were more intellectual than blacks. Its steroetyping either way you look at it. I've seen some very athletic whites and some very intellegent blacks. If we as a nation want racism to diminish, why is the race card constantly played?

Alabama has Dont'a Hightower from Marshall County Highschool in Lewisburg TN. He had a awesome season as a true freshman and got injured 3 games into this season. Most is projecting him to be better the Ro Mcclain. He will be taking over RM spot next year.

How many white running backs are in the NFL? How many white recievers, D-Backs? What percentage of the NBA has American white players? Why does Louisiana produce more D1 players than Tennessee, but has a smaller population.

Facts are facts, and I am awesome!

i think alot of it is presentation and representation, i played high school football at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, TN. I played from 1998 through 2001, we had several great players throughout those years.....in 1998 we won state, 1999 semi finals, in 2000 lost to Red Bank in the first round by a touchdown (Red Bank won state), and in 2001 lost in the Quarterfinals to Riverdale (also won state).......our coaches never published highlight films to any colleges, they never talked to those who could about playing in college, the media didnt hype anyone up......it didnt have anything to do about friday night lights....example: the Oakland versus Riverdale game used to be played at MTSU and drew more of a crowd than the MTSU home games did - upwards of 20K......it had to do with presentation and representation more than anything...

my thoughts on the matter.....sorry for rambling

Its hard to deny that african-americans, (ie, those men and women who were brought to the south against their will; not black africans like our president) were selectively bred (eugenics) by their white slave masters (*******s) for picking cotton and such. That being said, Hershel Walker or LT didnt become the the badasses they are without a lot of heart and hustle and extreme conditioning. Also, the increase in successful european nba players (who benefit from highly organized, non-academic training throughout their teens) suggest that our state would produce more recruits if better organized. So, in conclusion, you're all right.

Tennessee is 17% black. Alabama is 24% black. 6.2 million people vs 4.6, respectively. If math doesn't fail me, Tennessee has 1.05 million blacks, and Alabama has 1.1 million blacks. Alabama has had 39 4-star players in last 3 years. Tennessee has had 16. I don't think that's explained by black population.
