Spurrier: Fighting is the answer

November 1, 2007
BY TONI GINNETI Staff Reporter
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier knows what he would have done if he had been coaching Florida and Georgia's players got the mass-celebration penalty:
Start a fight.
Spurrier said if Gators coach Urban Meyer had known what was going to happen after the Bulldogs' first touchdown last week, he should have sent out ''one of his third-team guys and get in a wrestling match with the guys, get a fight started.''
Spurrier's reasoning? With all of Georgia's players off the bench, they all might get suspended as part of the Southeastern Conference's penalties for fighting.
''Leave the bench in a fight, and you're out the next game,'' Spurrier said. ''That's what we'd do if the other team ever does that.''
If Meyer had followed Spurrier's tactic, the Bulldogs ''would have been in deep trouble for the game next week,'' Spurrier said.

Soooooo.....shouldn't this thread be "Why Spurrier is a better coach than Meyer?"

What does this have to do with Fulmer? Of course Phil wouldn't have told his players to start a fight, very few coaches in the country would. I'm not so sure Spurrier would, although it's easy to talk about now.

So let's say if Fulmer would have been in Meyer's position and he sent the bench out there and got into a wrestling match with the Georgia players and we got our arses kicked...Would it be Fulmers fault that our players cannot fight as well as Georgia's??? Come on man...

I really want to call you an idiot for this, but I can't.

So: this is such a moronic topic.

Sounds like Steve's the type of person that drives a piece of crap car and intentionally slams on his breaks to try to get rear ended so someone has to buy him a new car....pitiful, just pitiful. Didn't know he was desperate.

I actually thought Spurrier's comment was pretty funny . . . just not exactly evidence of coaching superiority over the guy that beat him 5 days ago.

He is a sarcastic smart *ss. That is why he is starting to grow on me.

Bobby Bowden is constantly wiping his nose with a handkerchief on the sideline...this is undeniable evidence that he is also a better coach than Phil Fulmer.

Bad. Bad.

Bad.

First you have Richt ordering his players to celebrate in violation of the rules and you get a penalty.

Now Spurrier says that the way to deal with it is to sacrifice some third teamer so as to intentionally bait the other side into an actual fight, again in violation of the rules?

I'll say the same thing I said about this the other day when asked. I don't care if UGA celbrates their TD and I really don't want my own team to care. Its the 8th friggin weak of the season. You need to worry about your assignment and doing your job, not letting the other team's histrionics make one whit of difference to you.

When Meyer was asked about it, he shrugged it off. Why? Because he wants his own team to be focused on the job at hand, not respond to the other team's gimmicky gamesmanship.

Richt can do what he wants. It shouldn't matter to us.

actually, this thread should have been titled "why sos is a good coach", but I couldnt resist the chance to needle Phil. However, dont miss the point that Steve would have done something more than clap his hands and go looking for some magic dust.
