Why Not Mike Houston?

Yes he is a google coach so I doubt Currie even knows he exists because goodness knows he is incapable of doing due diligence. The guy has won at every level. he is a LOT more appealing than Chad Morris or Dave Doeren. He also beat South Carolina while at Citadel. Won FCS last year at James Madison and odds on favorite to win again. Overall record is 68-20 and 25-1 at JM.

Honestly until a couple of weeks ago I'd never heard of Mike Houston......

No thanks....

Hire:
Kiffin
Leach
Petrino
Sumlin
.....someone who has been a head coach at power 5 level......

Hire:
Kiffin - Yes
Leach - Wouldn’t come
Petrino - We’d be labeled as the biggest hypocrites in America
Sumlin - Eh

I agree but most on here want a big name to brag about and not someone that is hungry and young and proven to do the job. I also like the coach at Toledo.......a younger and cheaper version of Matt Campbell.

I agree that if they are not going to look at Kiffin or another big name out there (at least on the level with Gundy), and are going to take a chance on a guy, Mike Houston would be as close to a sure bet as there is. He's won at every single stop, including The Citadel. If you can recruit and win at The Citadel...

Beginning to agree. It’s a gamble tho. Maybe the gamble with Tee would be safer with recruiting considerations. Not sure how this guy presents. We know if we pass, he’ll end up a superstar that we reference in future coaching search whinings. :)

I think UT ought to try and get Mack Brown - hire him, let him stabilize the program, bring some respectability back and put a coach in waiting under him. Have him coach for 3 years...and let a "Lincoln Riley" type take over. Tennessee needs some stability.

I could get on board with Houston. I played against him in high school when he coached TC Roberson. Great coach, motivator, and stand up guy. Not sure if he is ready for the SEC but I think either he or Scott Satterfield at App would be good choices at this point. Also, pretty much assured neither would say no.

I would only put one coach on the list ahead of Mike Houston, and that would be Tee Martin. All the other names that have been thrown out there are people have been given a chance to win championships at a power 5 level and have failed (i.e. Steele, Morris, Kiffin, Sumlin, ect.). Tee hasn't struck out yet as a head coach, and maybe just maybe he is the next Saban, Meyer, or at least the next Dabo, Malzahn, Gundy, ect. We don't know, but I would rather hire him than someone we know from prior experience isn't going to get the job done by winning championships. Mike Houston similarly hasn't struck out yet, and maybe he is the next Jim Tressel (remember he made a similar jump and won big at Ohio State).

James Madison University

Could be the HR that nobody has even thought of.

His record and accolades speak for themselves.

May as well face the reality that we will not get a P5 coach worth a **** to coach here.

Houston may just jump. Although...

Its been discussed several times, Tennessee thinks it can go cheap and strike gold because it got lucky with Pearl 1 time. These things don't work out 99 out of a 100 times.

That's how Jim Tressel started. I bet some at Ohio State were not happy about that hire but he did pretty well there. You may be on to something.

I know basketball and football are completely different critters, but his resume looks a lot like Pearl's did when we got him. (Admittedly, Houston doesn't seem like a used car salesman.)

I think UT would exhaust other options first...and I suspect they're getting close. Guys like Brohm, Sumlin, Martin, Steele, and Kiffin would be more SEC ready, but the stench around UT right now is like nothing I've ever seen. Hell, now they've got our "top booster" on a secretly recorded tape that allegedly indicates he did know of the rebate fraud scheme. If that's proven true, brother being governor or not, how can we continue to remain tied to this family? I mean fans took the moral high road with Schiano, surely the admin will do the same with Haslam if found guilty/complicit?

With the exception of Steele and Martin, I agree. Martin may be ok, but he’s far from proven.

Houston, on the other hand, would be a homerun no one has heard of. Wins at every stop, and we’re not talking 8-5, he’s winning 10+ every year and bringing championships with it.

Currie couldn't sign this guy much less Mike Houston...
