I watched his highlight vid again tonight for S&Gs. YouTube - David Oku's Jr. Highlight

I'm still ecstatic to have him on our team. Just a phenomenal athlete. Everyone's talking about Bryce Brown and rightfully so, but I'm not so sure our boy Oku is that far behind him in talent if at all. Very few Vol Fans are prediction he's going to have much of a Freshmen impact according to the Freshmen impact poll thread. He's just so explosive and dynamic. He might not be as strong as Brown, but his yards gained after initial contact seems every bit as good. Agree? Is it wrong to hope to see him on the field this year and not redshirt him?

I see him as a down and distance sorta of back -- put him in in situations where the defense is hedging pass and we in turn run an Oku draw up the middle, and force linebackers to tackle him from behind (or not catch him at all preferably). Obviously, highlight vids rarely show RB's during pass protection, anybody got an educated opinion on how Oku does when he doesn't touch the ball?

I actually like him and I think he could get the Reggie Bush treatment minus the NCAA violations. Brown can be the Lindell White minus the fat.

Oku is just not on the same level as BB. Although, he is a solid back and will make a great one two punch with BB.

Oku and Brown will be quite the tandem in a few years, IMO. Oku is someone that everyone is going to be impressed with, IMO.

ur probably right but i didn't like how he de-committed 2 or 3 times before signing.

He only REALLY decommitted once. That was about a month before signing day if I remember correctly. If that turns you off to him, then that's your opinion. :hi:

As much as I like Hardesty, something tells me he will start only a few games. That leaves it open for the younger guys.

I can understand his reluctance to some extent. All the relationships that he had established with the former coaching staff were gone. Sure, all the recruits are told to commit to the school not to the coaching staff, but psychologically for a teenager that's near impossible.

Really had nothing to do with that. There's just personal things that he went through that were taxing for him and he made it through them and signed with UT. I applaud him for that.

So he would have de-committed regardless of the coaching change?

i'm pretty sure he de-committed back in december before Kiffin got hired. Once we hired Kiffin he reaffirmed his committment. Once signing day came or around that time he decides open up again. I really didn't care about him after that.

IMO if Hardesty stays healthy he'll get more touches in the backfield than anyone on this team..

I can see us running an excellent two back system with Brown and Oku. I see brown getting the brunt of the carries and Oku getting some carries with a few swing passes every now and then.

The people saying Oku isn't on Brown's level can't really back it up with anything other than star ratings. Looking at both of their highlight reels, Oku seems just as explosive, a better slasher, almost as fast, better at breaking tackles, and he played against much better competition. Doesn't run backward like Brown does either.
