why is it always something with Heupel?

why is it that one part of Heupel's team is a catastrophic failure? one year it's the WRs, last year it was the defense and players leaving, this year it's the OL. all we heard all off-season was about the QBs. well that was a smokescreen to take our attention away from the REAL problem, the OL. TEN ****ING SACKS! how did an OL this horrible go unnoticed by all the media? I hope you all realize there's ZERO chance Faizon makes it through this season without a season ending injury.

there's literally always something with this guy. it's all a shell game, guess which part of my team sucks this year.
In his defense…. We are in a rebuilding year. Every year

No doubt. I have zero doubt he won’t. His roster management philosophy is awful. Player development has shown to be poor. In game clock management is bad. He beats up on non-SEC schools and bad SEC teams. Last year was kind of pathetic and this OL literally could get him canned this year. They are so bad, it could get that bad.
Well I hope you’re wrong and think you’re wrong . I hope you hope so too.

no chance. You dont win in the SEC giving up 10 sacks a game. We might beat Arky....lesser chance for SC. The rest? zero chance. This team will give up 70+ sacks this year. The worst O line I've ever seen and it ain't close.

I’m convinced you’re trolling at this point. How about an AV bet? If the line gives up 70+ sacks this season I’ll use an appropriate AV of your choose for one month. Same goes the other way if they don’t give up that many sacks. You seem to be pretty confident in how trash they are; so how about it?

But the problem is, since we have lost all of the past coacch recruits we have declined with Hypes recruits, same as he did where he came from. He did good with other coaches recruits but went down after they graduated or left
Did you see the defense Saturday? They looked pretty damn good. You have to use a little common sense here…. FB just turned 18 in June…. Let that sink in.

If I could nuke everyone off this site who has the take "Tennesee is a mediocre program with a low ceiling" I would. It's a special kind of stupid to not recognize the leadership and coaching atrocities that have been committed over the last 20 years that have hijacked a once proud tradition. Legitimately stupid. Retarded even.

I agree. To your point, we have been mediocre for the last 20 years but the success and tradition are there. I lived through a lot of it. These young Vols fans unfortunately have seen nothing but mediocrity. I’m tired of the mediocrity because I’ve seen what we can be and we have the money, resources, facilities and most importantly, the fanbase, to be a top 5 program that competes for championships. What’s even more frustrating is that we’re willing to spend it! Otherwise Jim Knowles, Coach Owings and their staff would not be here. We’re outspending most programs so there’s no excuse for Heupel’s entire staff and roster not to be top notch. I think that’s on him. I love the guy but he sure does seem to miss a lot on key coach and player evaluations (Tim banks, Willie Martinez, ellarbee, Milton, Nico, all things offensive line).

With that being said, our roster is as loaded as it’s ever been since he got here. He made excellent moves on the defensive side of the ball, which tells me he is learning and willing to improve by making hard decisions. Skill players- Faizon, TK Keys, DGG…it’s coming together. But it’ll all be worthless if we can’t field an offensive line that will open up holes to run through and give FB more time to throw. Fixing those issues will get us out of mediocrity. Then if Heupel wants to be elite, he needs to clean up the penalties and learn how to manage the clock, i.e. he needs to become more disciplined himself.

Look, there is a slight middle ground here. The last time the offensive line got manhandled like this was Georgia 2022. We clearly beat a lot of SEC teams that year but had we played Georgia as our first SEC opponent that year then the same people saying we arnt going to win any games in the SEC this year would have been saying it then too. Texas is limited on offense by Arch Manning at times, but make no mistake about their defense...it is elite. Now with that being said if we want to compete with elite defenses, it is time to move on from our Oline coach. There is no excuse for 10 sacks in a game, and almost half of them being because David Sanders got consistently beat. David Sanders has all the elite physical traits you want in a LT, so him being consistently beat is purely on our coach not having him mentally ready to go against someone like Simmons (who led in sacks last year but had 2 so far this year before yesterday). We will still be able to win some SEC games this year but were not going to able to compete against any elite defenses with a freshman QB and an Oline that isnt coached at an elite level.
There may be some truth to this, but there has been concern about the OL since the Furman game. For our seasons sake we better hope Texas is just that good up front

Wow. Danny White has many on this board he could hire to run the program at a fraction of what he pays Josh. Cgrish, surrender or NC are self proclaimed experts far far better at coaching than Heupel . There's many more, wonder if Danny white needs to go for not recognizing that.Maybe replace Donde also.
I get not liking pessimism, but not being a fan of objectivity either, is an odd position for you.

Elarbee was Josh Heupel's best man at his wedding. That's going to be a very, very tough, "I gotta let you go, Glen" conversation. Firing the guy who is arguably your best friend because he can't keep up is a horrific thing to have to do, I'd imagine.

We had the discussion on VN about Peyton rooting for Arch because "some things are more important than football." Folks saw it both ways and that's fine, but it does resonate a little here.

While friendship isn't family, I've been blessed with some extremely good friends whose family treated me like family, embraced me like a son/brother, and held me up when I was falling.

I don't disagree that Elarbee needs to move on but damn...... I don't envy Josh.
It’s a tough situation for sure. But there are ways around it… hire an “analyst” and allow him to coach technique and scheme while Elarbee remains involved in recruiting and developing the run game

Tennessee just doesnt have what it takes. Never will. 98 and everything before was a fluke. Just look at Florida...one hire, immediate improvement...playoff bound. UT never has been nor ever will be a football school. We just think it is. We're a 7-5/8-4 kinda team and always will be. That's the truth.
There L's are coming.

OTOH, we waited with Fulmer and then successive weak AD coaching hires until TN was not an attractive job for a top tier coach.

I think TN fans delude themselves regarding Saban. I don't think AL was doing anything multiple programs weren't doing - including TN - but Saban's machine-like coaching system was the difference. The guy won 7 NCs and had nothing left to prove except continuing to subject himself to the grind at age 72. We should pray for someone who can 'stack the deck' like that, which was only possible by being the winningest coach ever. Success is its own progenitor.

Heupel is nowhere even ball-parking that conversation. Should TN fans be content with average 9-3 seasons? Perhaps. I think our all-time win % is .671 or 7.1 wins/season. That places us about 14th among college programs. Maybe it's just who we are.
But is that acceptable? I’d like an explanation for why being average and mediocre is acceptable. Does anyone think that’s acceptable at Ohio State? Georgia? Why should we be content not competing for championships? Tennessee is paying a heck of a lot of money for coaches and players to shoot for 7-8 wins a year. No one is going to win a championship every year, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to be in that conversation every year and not once every 4 years.

Jumping the gun on Florida. Let’s play a few more games.

I suggested that elsewhere but it's still hard because Elarbee would see what's happening, his best friend would be nudging him out the door.

The best outcome is that Elarbee does what's good for Heupel, is that selfless friend, and volunteers to leave because he's damaging his friend's career.

The worst outcome is Heupel choosing friendship over his career and knowing what he needs to do but not doing it.

Not everyone is cut out to play D1 football.
Not everyone is cut out to coach D1 football.

My advice: don't recruit or hire someone so close to you that you overlook their flaws.

CJH comments right before kickoff, I had to search them out to see if they matched what I thought he said. He had me encouraged with these:

I love the way that we've prepared. We practiced well. Let's tee it up and let's go play it aggressive. Coaches are going to call it aggressive. Players have to go play it aggressive.

I don’t recall any aggressive coaching on offense. No reverse. No WR pass. Not anything. Just vanilla as could be. When we recover the onside kick I thought surely he would think, wow we were given another shot…time to empty the holster. Nope.

He has no choice but to get more creative with Brandon. I watched the replay earlier this morning because you can often pick details up from TV that you might have missed watching it live. I didn't understand why we weren't trying more screens, but now I know why. Never understood why weren't rolling either. It's almost like Heupel was so shell shocked by our lack of execution that he locked up calling plays.

I think we'll see more creativity Saturday. Hope so anyway

The screen thing blows my mind too. I don’t believe he has ever used RB screens much but he did use WR screens in the past. They both seem extinct at this point.

I think Morris can be electric and is made for screen passes. Blows my mind.

The one to Mathews worked well so I am not sure why we didn't do it more than once. We also gave up on the run far too soon. Hell, the Eagles were opening holes all over the place last night and running it right down the Bears' throats and just completely abandoned it. All these modern day play callers give up on the run too soon
