Usually, I could care less about Vandy football.

But, now I think that we as Vol fans should care.
I don't want Derek Mason to be fired.
So, I hope that they go 6-6 or 7-5 in the next few years.

Why?
Because I think we are really going to like our new DC Shoop. And, Shoop has said that he loved his time in Nashville and Vandy as an assistant coach.
He will recruit that area great now for UT.

It does scare me if Mason gets fired that Vandy might come after Shoop as Head Coach there.

So, even if Shoop only stays with us for a couple of seasons (and remember he has no buyout), I would much rather see him leave our state and the South when he becomes a Head Coach somewhere after leading our defense to a few outstanding seasons.

Honestly we probably should be pulling for them to help our SOS. The cracks about us only playing 7 actual conference games plus Vandy are getting old. They need to step it up if they are going to keep riding the SEC gravy train.

IMHO, there's very little chance that Shoop would ever go to Vandie. If he does well at Tennessee, he'll have much, much better opportunities than that hellhole where coached go to die. He may love Nashville, but if he kills it this year as our DC and a school like Texas or LSU comes calling, I'm guessing he'll very quickly love Austin and Baton Rouge.

Also, I hope Vandie goes 0-12 this year...if they do, they'll be scraping the bottom of the FCS barrel for an up and comer assistant coach from Northern Illinois or somewhere.

I don't care if Bear Bryant rose from his grave to coach vandy.

Whenever we're not in position to beat them into the ground for having the audacity to line up against us, we have much bigger problems than who's coaching in Nashville..

I would like Shoop to stay at Tennessee long enough to become part of Butch's "coaching tree." How long is that? Well, one year won't cut it. That's a watering hole stop. Two might, barely, though Shoop was with Franklin longer. Three or more would definitely do it.

Will he stay that long? Even if Mason keeps Vandy's job from coming available, serious doubts on three or more. Bob will be scrutinized closely as a potential head coach by every "little brother" program in the Power 5 (the Syracuses and Illinois and Washington States) starting this next off-season. Even the better Power 5 programs will start to seriously consider him as a possible HC after two very good years with the Vols.

Anyway, I'm with you on the idea of Vandy scraping by just well enough to keep Mason from being fired. The longer he's there, the better it is for us, in several ways (on field, recruiting, coach moves, etc). Always want them (and every other SEC team) to win every non-conference game they have, of course. So that gets them four wins. Just gotta find two more against Ky, Mizzou, USCe and maybe a surprise against an SEC-West team.

As long as Mason gets them to a bowl game, I think he gets another year. Hope that's enough, anyway.

Shoop is too smart to jump to Vandy. There are several better programs with coaches on the hot seat that Shoop could consider in 1 or 2 years (Auburn, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M immediately jump to mind).

If Shoop is as good as we think, he'll be gone soon anyways.
Doubt it's Vandy that gets him.

As long as one of their losses is to Tennessee, I really don't give a crap about Vandy football.......

I feel certain that Mason's job would be safe if Vandy gets to a bowl. That would be an exceptional season for them and a great job by him.

Yeah, whenever I want to hear people obsess over while constantly bashing TN football fans or constantly claim how they have superior intellects, I just visit our recruiting forum.

SOS isn't something SEC teams have to worry about. I won't ever root for Vandy.

Not necessarily, VB.

Absolutely true when it comes to the SEC-West. But as anemic as the East has become in recent years, SoS is actually something to pay attention to.

We always play Bama; that will keep the Vols' SoS higher than the rest of the East as long as Bama continues to dominate nationwide.

But here's an eye opener: next year, we may only play two ranked teams. Two. Bama and Georgia, they're the only teams on our schedule getting any love in the way-too-early polls.

Two ranked opponents puts us down among the weak schedules, like Ohio State (remember how much we collectively laughed at their weak SoS last fall?).

Yes, our SoS in 2015 was 12th in the country. But even that took a dip as Florida, Mizzou, Arkansas, and (to an extent) Georgia were exposed. We started the year with one of the five toughest SoSs in the nation. We only stayed as high as #12 at the end of the year thanks to Bama and Oklahoma. And we don't have an OK-caliber team in 2016 or 2017....

Look at the rest of the SEC East, now: Florida at 17 ... Georgia at 33 ... three teams between 38 and 41 ... and Kentucky down at 64. These are SoS ratings post-season, now that we know how all the opponents did.

So a high SoS is not a guarantee just because we're in the SEC. Gotta keep one eye on it, even with Bama a perennial rival.

In that case, I hope we remain stagnant as a program and never get to 10 wins.......I would hate for some other program to come scoop up Butch as their HC. So asinine.

Fade, Fade, Fade....

Wishing for a neighbor to do well is not the same as wishing for our own team to do poorly. OP is saying it's "worth the cost" for Vandy to do mildly well if it will help us keep our talented coaching staff. That's not at all like saying it's worth the cost for us to do poorly to keep our own staff.

One makes sense. The other is nonsense, indeed asinine. :hi:

Wishing a hated rival does well so they don't come steal our new coach who hasn't coached a game for us yet is the very definition of asinine. But thanks for the condescension with your "fade, fade, fade" intro

Your post is reasonable and well thought out. Thats not a compliment.. It is why people are gonna flame you. Logic is like witchcraft around these parts.

I'm not sure Vandy fits the bill as a "rival."

Sorry, I didn't mean it to be condescending, I meant it as a friendly kidding thing. :hi:
