Why exactly aren't our players developing?

Give Nick Saban our talent and he turns them into All Americans. Recruiting matters big time in the SEC but if you don't have a coach who can't develop them properly, it's not going to work. That's one of Butch's main weaknesses.

And here's the daily Nick Saban reference..... I saw twelve Nick Sabans on the way home from work today. I should have told at least one of them UT needs a coach.

If it were one or two players it would be the players, with it being most of them the answer is simple: COACHING, or lack thereof.

Just weren't as tough this year as last.. Something changed , maybe it was the S&C coach, something wasn't the same.. I still can't figure out why Butch had Kamara setting on the bench til basically the A&M game..

Both lines of scrimmage were a disappointment. No improvement on the Oline. Didn't live up to hype on Dline. Even early they weren't getting to the QB's. DB's were burnt toast against any half ass QB they came across. Losing Maybin showed we have no one other than kirkland that can play SEC ball. So we got a lot of problems to address.

Offseason weight and conditioning program.....which is why it is expected there will be major changes there first and foremost. This not only hinders development, but is responsible for lack of speed, fatigue, and injuries. All fall under Butch's program, but in being hired he should trust that they can get the job done and the players ready. They have done a horrible job this past offseason with the football players.

Subpar position coaches for the most part, with inability to affect positive change from above.

My breakdown for what it's worth, which ain't much:

Secondary - horrible. Needs new coach.
Offensive Line - slightly less horrible. Needs new coach.
Line Backers - below avg. superior athletes made up for coaching deficiencies when healthy. Needs new coach.
Receivers - Avg to slightly less. Needs new coach.
Running backs - good to above average
Defensive line - workable when healthy
Tight Ends - was good, but quickly regressing. Jury still out.
Quarterback - no dedicated position coach squandering what talent may be there. Need coach.
Special teams - overall good
S&C - ummm... No. Get new coach NOW.

Now, big guns...

Defensive coordinator - who the hell knows. There was so much dumpster fire on the defensive side of the ball. Hard for me to believe Shoop got that bad that quickly. I think he got Butched... Willing to give second chance here.

Offensive coordinator - Again, who the hell knows. At times horrendous, but also at times brilliant... Needs new blood infusion rather than propped up older Butch.

Head coach - needs serious self reflection and back away from the micro level of managing. And stop with the gimmicks. Nobody's buying the shtick anymore.

Some here have brought up a disconnect, the staff and the players aren't on the same page? The players don't respect the staff and are not buying in? Other than possibly Dobbs, I don't recall seeing any visible leaders on this roster. Barnett is up for awards, he's quiet...Maybin is injured has time on his hands till the draft he's quiet, same with Sutton and Kirkland. I'm at a loss to explain it.

Butch has to know he can't keep doing this. Even one change would do better. A strength and conditioning coach or a strong position coach change here or there. I think he can't get a good coach because he is a dumb dumb. Can you tell I'm trying to keep it clean?

Colton Jumper has developed. When I think about it I see development. Jennings, Malone etc.

So Derek Barnett didnt develop , Juann Jennings didnt develop, Reeves Maybin didnt develop, Jalen Hurd didnt develop, Cam Sutton didnt develop, Josh Dobbs didnt develop, Josh Malone isnt developing, Evan Berry didnt develop,Kamara hasnt developed, Ethan Wolf didnt develop.
Most of those guys have under achieved slightly, I feel like Barnett is still lacking on everything but the pass rush. Great player still though

You can't be serious. You just can't be. Most of them have under achieved? Most??

Barnett is the best all around DE in college football. There are two DE's projected higher in the draft, Garret (aTm) and Allen (Alabama) and Barnett is better all around than both. He is a great pass rusher but has more tackles for loss than both and has 50 total tackles which is 18 more than Garret and 2 less than Allen. That would indicate to me that he he can get after the passer but also adjust and make a play on a runner or chase a guy down.

Under achieved!???? Really!????

We have great recruiting classes and the roster is stacked!! We are every bit as good as OK, Bama, etc. We proved we belong on the field. My question is

1. How are other teams even less talented like Vandy and Usce out developing our players?

2. What do we need to do to better develop our players.

3. How do you develop a player?

These are basic kindergarden questions. But I'm tired of the bull crap? we deserve answers. Since Butch talks to us like we're idiots maybe we need to have an understanding of what's really going on from team 187.

Sorry, didn't read past your second sentence. We are nowhere near as talented.....no where near.....as Alabama.

Otherwise, not sure how to answer your 3 questions, but certainly agree that Butch and staff struggle to develop our players, especially the highest rated ones.

this is not an accurate statement.

the last four classes were ranked 21, 5, 5 and 15. That is not great classes that produce a stacked roster.

Alabama - 1, 1, 2 and 1 are great classes that produce a stacked roster.

Auburn - 8, 9, 6 and 9. These classes should produce a very good roster with good but not great classes

LSU - 6, 2, 8 and 5. Almost there. need to get the 6 and 8 to top 5.

Great rosters are classes that AVERAGE top 5 in recruiting rankings. Those make up championship rosters.

If your averaging outside the top 10, you are not going to be competitive with programs in the top 10 and certain not close to competing with top 5 classes. Why we are below the three above.

Florida has not even been as good as Tennessee the last 4 years. It showed on the field when we beat them this year and should have beaten them the previous 2 years. But of course coaches can take great, very good, good or bad players and coach them into losses.

Too many Tennessee fans believe this roster is much better than it truly is. You can have a couple classes that are top 5 and then add a 15 and 21. leaves too many holes to fill when injuries or defections strike.

just my opinion

edited note: This staff has never been a great recruiting staff. They are average

Spot on.
