:banghead: It seems to be a trend, do they need to break a sweat before they play well? Maybe they should ride bikes in the locker room. "Good" teams won't let them get away with this first quarter, half coma.

I remember alot of years where we didn't play all that great in the first half. Then we would come out and look like a totally different team.

I think one of the things that makes Fulmer (and staff) so good is that they make good halftime adjustments and have the coaching edge in the second half. Unfortunately, the only explanation I have for this poor first-half performance is a lack of preparation. It seems to affect both offense and defense. :dunno:

Didn't we start pretty fast against Georgia and Florida?

There are exceptions to this trend, but the reality is we do seem to have trouble getting started in the first half..... especially against weaker teams.

Prepare prepare prepare!

even in fast starts it seems we play exception for 2 of the 4 quarters and go flat for 2 ...most of the time it seems we are flat in the 1st qtr IMO

That's what happens when you are playing young QBs and can't run the ball consistently.

alot longer than that.

remember Florida in 1990? The score was only 7-3 at the half. The Vols went on to win 45-3.... and yes, Spurrier was the coach.

Don't forget the D. Especially against Bama and ND. Bama had 50% of their yards in the 1st quarter (100 or so in first quarter, 200 or so for the game). ND was even more lopsided (120 or so in the first quarter, 200 or so for the game). Other than the USC game, are D clamps down but why can't it start that way? Why does it take a quarter to "Get serious".

I think its a lack of execution rather than a poor game plan in many cases. But the lack of execution is partially due to our emtional level. It seems like we rarely come out with our tails on fire, coming out to bust chops.

Last time I remember a superb beginning of a game was at Florida in '01. I agree that for the past 3 or 4 years, as a rule, we've started slow.

I'm not going to criticize the coaching staff too much though, because we still win > 80% of our games. It would be nice to have another player like Al Wilson, someone who takes it upon himself to get the guys fired up. Al Wilson wouldn't let the team play flat.

in my book Al Wilson was the best "coach" on the field to ever play at UT
