I have come to the conclusion that for the most part just about any coach can win with the right players on th team. The way Tennessee's program has gone into the default mode as of late, change is defintely needed. One way to re-build a solid program is to recruit the best and let them start. Afford them that chance or else we may have trouble recruiting other great players. Everyone on Tennessee's team had a chance to have a better than 5-7 record and they all failed miserably, except a few players.I feel bad for Hardesty but I think this is the route the new Tennessee has to travel.

I think you have to make him earn his job. And Hardesty has been impressive recently.

exactly. If Hardesty stays healthy and beats Brown out for the job, Brown can sit. Who knows, Oku may come in and be heads and shoulders above Brown. Starting Brown just because he was Rivals #1 overall is the most ridiculous thing I've read on this board in a while. Of course, the OP has at least a few of my time ten most ridiculous comments all time from this board.

I agree he should earn the job and he will. He's just a freak of nature running back. I love Hardesty and I think he will get his carries. Either way we win.

I can see BB playing a lot at the slot position. If watch the highlights from the Army AA game, he caught 2 long TD passes from the slot. This guy can make plays wherever you put him on the field!

I think Brown will get plenty of carries, but I don't think he will be the starter to begin the season, if at all next year. He could earn his way to the #1 spot, but I don't think it should just be handed to him.

He will be the #1 soon enough if he turns out to be what we expect.

John Brice from Volquest was on the sports monster yesterday and he said he fully expected Bryce Brown to get a lot of playing time next year at different positions. He said by what he has seen at practice so far, Hardesty and Creer would get a bulk of the carries at TB, but Brown would see significant playing time as a freshman, because he would be utilized in different ways. He thought Oku would see playing time next year as well, but mostly on special teams. He also said Tauren Poole looked really good in the last practice and has stepped up his game a lot since last year. He said UT would definitely have a hard time finding a way to get all these guys reps, but if anyone can do it Eddie Gran can. He talked about how he used Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams and another guy at Auburn. I can't remember his name, but he said all 3 of them made it to the NFL. He said UT is probably as deep at RB as any school in the country. He also said it would be tough, but it was a great problem for us to have.

I think all we have to do is sit back and trust that the coaches put the best players in that give us the best chance to win the game. All of the players understand and most like the fact that they have to compete for the starting position.

I heard or read somewhere that Eric Berry is the only player guaranteed to start. He has already proven himself.

Jacobs probably...he was the best of the three in the NFL this year but most of his college playing time wasn't at Auburn. Unless Kenny Irons somehow figured into that rotation.

He'll start in time....But to start him over Hardesty or Creer at this point is rediculous...He will be a monster of a player in his day but lets let him learn the systems and the routes and EARN his way to the starting job...Oku is not going to just sit back and let him win the starting job either so it should be interesting in practice in the fall.

Except for people that only proved themselves against high school kids...practice is where you become a starter

Hardesty has had three years to prove himself. I would be shocked if too much changes this year. Each season or Spring the talk is he's never looked better or been healthier.

BB will have every chance to prove himself in fall camp.

Hardesty has as much if not more to prove to the coaches than BB or Oku.

I'm pumped that we landed BB as well. But let's remember that all of his success has come in High School. Just like college success doesn't always translate into NFL success, the same can be said for HS to college.

Let him come in, learn and hopefully earn a spot.

It's nice to be excited, but let's be real.

You are right on both guys. It was Brandon Jacobs that John Brice mentioned, but I googled Eddie Gran and there were actually more. Gran is the Man!

Quote:
At Auburn, Gran coached multiple 1,000 yard rushers and has five players that were on an NFL roster this season: Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams, Ronnie Brown, Kenny Irons, Brandon Jacobs and Heath Evans.

Before going to Auburn, Gran coached New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister at Ole Miss, where he coached from 1994-1998.

Competition is good for business.

Toney Williams is going to be turning heads. He is going to be the Mike Alstott of the team.

Whoever starting will have earned the spot, I can guarantee you that.

Yeah, I still think Creer and Hardesty will get the bulk of the carries, but there will be plays designed to get BB in the game at maybe WR or some other position. He said he wanted to be a versatile player and be used at TB, WR and returning kicks, so this will work out well.

and when he's not hurt, he's performed well, probably better than any of the backs while he's been here. You can't let the "he might get hurt" factor be part of your decision on who to start, especially since Bryce Brown is still nothing but a bunch of question marks. He doesn't have more to prove. He's backed up the fact that he can be a good RB the past three years.

I agree with everything you said. And in the spirit of being real... Hardesty has proven to be injury-prone and very average in three years.

Creer has done little except a couple of nice games against weaker competition and has proven he has trouble holding onto the ball.

So I don't see how anyone has anymore confidence in those two than BB at this point.

Bottom line whoever is getting the carries will have to prove it.

How many 100 yard games does he have?

How many does Creer have?

What about yards per carry for both of them?

Hardesty is averaging under 4 yards a carry for his career. That's terrible.

Creer is over 5 ypc, but most are against weaker teams.

Again Hardesty has not been good by any measure for three years.

To be the starting tailback, that will get the majority of carriers, Hardesty has as much to prove as anyone.
