I have not seen any criticism of EA, although I have seen a few posts on this and other boards where people question why Crompton did not get more reps. Considering what the Vols have on hand I think starting EA is UTK's best hope for a winning season this year, however I hope the new head coach will design or select and OC who designs an offense built around a mobile QB.

Why ruin Fulmer a good excuse for next year for getting beat by Florida ("Our QB is inexperienced") by playing JC some this year.

If you remember Tee saw little action playing behind Manning......even in the bowouts. Not Phil or Cuts m.o. to play the backup unless its nessecary.

I think Ainge is doing a great job - he just can't play all the positions on the field. He is a bright spot in my view.

The only beef anyone can have on ainge is that he doesn't seem to play as well against better competition. Other than that he has been a steady productive QB.

Ainge is doing well, I agree, he doesn't play defense. It's a team sport and he is doing all that he can do to help this team win.

Overall, I'd rate Ainge's play as very good this year. He is completing about 65% of his passes, throwing for over 275 yards a game, with 10/2 TDs/Picks.

His mistakes, however, have been huge when he has made them--the Cal fumble that was returned for a TD, the Arkansas St. INT return for a TD, and whatever part he played in the fumbled handoff against Florida. Blame the OL, the running game, or the pinky if you'd like, but there is still some room for improvement from the QB position.

I doubt even Tebow could have held onto the ball with the spear in the back EA got at Cal, we won the Ark ST game so why does that matter. And as pitiful as our defense played , if that fumble hadn't happened it probably would not have mattered. The WHOLE team could use so improvement, but who else in the country couldn't?

The interception inside the 10 on the first drive against Fla. didn't help either. That being said, thank god for Ainge this year!

I'm not bashing Ainge; I like the kid, and his play is certainly not at the top of our list of concerns. But he should have gotten rid of the football on the Cal fumble before the hit, and hitting a DB in the chest with a football is a bad play, whether you win the game or not. In 3 of our 4 games, he's had a hand in an error that cost our team points, and that is a little concerning. I don't think he needs to skip the film session.

Cotton, Cotton, Cotton  your posts are usually pretty good. The Cal defender was totally untouched and came from his blind side way to quick. He never saw him. I'm all for QB's (as a former LB) taking responsibility but this was on the Oline and the RB.

No one is bashing Ainge, but people do think his injury is affecting some of his throws.

Thanks for the compliment, but I still think he could have--and should have--gotten rid of the ball before the hit. Regardless of that play, he can still improve, and eliminating mistakes that turn into touchdowns for the bad guys is one of those areas.

Vid of the play:

Follett sack and Williams fumble recovery - Cal vs. Tenn 07

It is quick, but note Ainge's pump. Ball should have been gone with the pocket collapsing.
Ainge did sort of lock in on the right side of the field, but there was no pocket to collapse though. The Left Tackle doubled inside and never even got close to the blitzer.

It would have been nice if either the LT or Ainge had seen the blitzer, but when guys are flying into the backfield from the QB's blind side, good things rarely happen.

as it relates to that play, the thing that got me was there was no recognition on any part of the offense, qb or otherwise, that a LINEBACKER was lined up a slot receiver. an adjustment should have been made one way or the other. he never even looked to that side once the ball was snapped.

now having said that, ainge has played relatively well this season, and shouldn't be "bashed". he's not perfect, but i haven't seen a perfect qb yet.

Can't watch vid at work. Was it a three step drop?

It was a 5 step drop and if you watch you can see that he wants to get the ball away as soon as he plants and hit the slot receiver on a little 7 yard curl, but he had to hold the ball because it was covered.
