Why are people mad at Heupel?

As a flawless being, I expect flawless perfection of coaches, kids and Volnation brethren. When perfection is not met, my self-righteous rage flows through me until perfection is restored. Your thoughts?

Three letters: B.V.S. Some of the most vocal amongst us can’t be happy or encouraged because chaos and letdown is all they know.

A lot of it seems like backlash from fans that took the trip to Columbus. Wasted their money because Tennessee has traditionally fallen flat in big-time road games (frankly, most teams do).

I have seen many people getting upset at Heupel for not firing his staff, but he has not had to. The defense has improved, so he has not had to fire anyone on that side of the ball. On the offensive side, we have regressed, but we had a QB last year that could not hit a mid-range ball and a Qb this year in his first year of playing and he rarely hit deep balls. This severely limits offensive playcalling and gives defensive an advantage because they do not have to worry about the deep ball, etc. Also, I am just going to say Heupel's achievements so far again.

Came into a 3-7 team with the entire team transferred out and scholarship limitations (that we still have)
Only UT coach to beat Saban and ended the 15-year streak against the former Heisman-winning QB.
Ended the streak vs Florida
Undefeated vs Florida and Bama at home
Two #1 rated Qb out of highschool in the last 3 classes.
Has had two top ten recruiting classes which is the best sense 2014 and 2015.
First TN coach to make playoffs
One loss at home in last 3 years.

I know we got blown out by OSU and are losing players in the transfer portal. But, I trust Heupel running the program
Only idiots are mad at Heupel.

Hooker was a senior his 2 seasons with us and Nico is a Freshman that is 11-3 as a starter. 1 bowl win.
Doesn't change the fact that he held the ball 1 second longer than Hendon did.

Point of the post is about the OL, the OL in 2024 gave Nico more time than the 2022 OL gave Hendon. It is not about what Nico did with that time.....

We went 3 consecutive games with 0 points in the 1st half (school record). While we won 10 games, that stretch indicated something is wrong - severely wrong on offense. We became very predictable on offense and it caught up with UT when they played serious talent - UGA and OSU. I'm not mad at CJH, I just wish that there would be a meaculpa from him and he would state what the problem(s) were and what he's going to do to resolve it. If fans and alumni can be asked for ever increasing amounts of money - then fans/alumni have a right to ask a few questions too. This is nearly the only forum to do so.

That is exactly the right way to read his comment, I think.

Some folks--surprisingly many--have no sense of scale. They don't know how to step back and consider the wider picture.

It's like, in the heat of a play, a fan might key in on our right guard as he blows his assignment. "Bad play," the fan might say. And he would be right.

But two hours later, after the game, if the fan is still moaning about that specific player on that specific down, he has no sense of scale. Particularly if that play had no significant impact on the game's outcome. Most especially if we won the match. That fan has no ability to zoom out. No ability to put things in perspective.

We have a number of fans on these boards who lack that mental skill set.

Go Vols!

I haven't seen anyone "angry" with Heupel. I have seen some constructive criticism, and I think that is warranted. Something is off with the receivers and Nico, whether it is scheme or talent I'm not sure. Likely a combination of both.
There's always room for growth. Withholding any and all criticism is a sure way to ensure stagnation.

I am going off what opposing coaches and experts said. They cited the offensive line would actually set up different when we passed which tipped them to the play. They also, stated it did not hold up well.

In 2022, the line wasn't very good either. You are right that Hooker improvised. Put Hooker on a more talented team (or give us a few breaks) and he likely pulls a 2019 LSU or 2011 Auburn kind of run together to a title.

I do think our offense is predicated on having a Hendon Hooker, Cam Newton, Joe Burrow, or Johnny Manziel like playmaker to compete at a high level.
Yes, having a gamer at QB is far and away the best weapon for an offense. Great QBs can make average OLs look great. Having a great left tackle and really good RGs and RTs are the key to having championship winning offenses. That is the separator from being really good vs. being great

Comparing a blown play by a right guard to 3 consecutive 1st halves with no points is moronic (or gullible) at best. There is a problem and it wasn’t resolved during the season ie. OSU. Sure the Vols rolled over Miss St and Vandy but those should have been wins and were considered such at the beginning of the season. My point of CJH coming clean about UT’s offensive woes was completely missed by you apparently. And yes he owes the fans an explanation especially to those folks who traveled to Columbus. You keep wearing those orange tinted glasses though.

Some of you aren’t any better than the ones you claim are negative. If it was up to some on here Butch, Dooley and Pruitt would still be coach. I remember the posts.

Heupel has turned the program around without any major NCAA issues. We made the playoff etc. He also has struggled developing linemen and wide receivers. All this can be true simultaneously. Doesn’t mean you’re calling for him to be fired, although it wouldn’t break my heart for a couple of assistants to go.

Give the coaches credit where it’s due, same with blame. Doesn’t make you a bad fan.

And without naming names, if you keep a list of fans you think are negative, get a life.

Of course it was a troubling issue. BTW, we handled Vanderbilt much easier than the other top ranked teams did, and did so coming out of a hole. You can diminish that if you like, but it was a defacto playoff game for us. We had to win to get in the playoffs and everyone associated with the team knew it.

He doesn't owe the fans jack! He owes us what he has given us. We're in the right direction. Relax

Players portal out of UT then succeed and is always "he finally got decent coaching." Portal into UT and succeed and it's "he was clearly coached up before he got here."

Yall are funny
He was the number 1 corner in the portal when we got him. He was good before he got here

They want Pruitt back.
Think for a second about what you just said.

“Anyone who feels uneasy about watching the Vols go a month without a first quarter point and getting blown out in the biggest game in years would only feel that way if they want Jeremy Pruitt back.”

Meanwhile you probably said fans would be unhappy with an undefeated national championship and wanted Butch back in defense of Pruitt when he lost to Georgia State.

The bigger problem is, I don't hate him. At the same time, I have very little respect and a whole lot of doubt he has what it takes to deliver the Vols to the promised land. Like the best Militry Generals, the best football coaches are by a rule of thumb unlikeable people. Heupel lacks that win at all costs killer instinct needed to take the next step.

Ask yourself, Would you like to have a beer with Heupel?" You would probably answer, yes. Now ask yourself, Would I like to have a beer with Saban or Kirby Smart?"

For those who don't like equating football to a war game, then take it up with the ghost of Gen. Neyland.
I'd have a few with them 😄. They all seem like down to earth guys but its the what separates them from everyone else as a coach competitor. I believe those guys Saban and Smart demand perfection out of everyone and everything in those programs and it shows. If the blade of grass is off they'll get onto the grounds keeper 😄 but there are people like that in every profession. Vols got Heupel so we just gotta hope he makes the best decisions for interest of the program. One thing that's been incredibly frustrating to watch is the lack of discipline and consistent execution and we know you ain't winning championships without those.
