Why all the “we need a VFL” chatter?

His resume is equal that of Dabo when he was hired by Clemson. His resume is not much weaker than Stoops when he was hired by Oklahoma. Richt at UGA. Stronger than Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern.

Technically Tee’s resume is = Kiffin when we first hired him, considering even Lane probably leaves that Raiders stint off his resume when applying for jobs. Yet we all know Tee is more mature than Kiffin ever was and has a clean rep through the coach world. And it’s not that much further from Fulmer’s resume when he was hired here. He had been OC for only 3-4 years if I remember correctly.

At some point the Vols have got to take a chance. UGA takes chances. Two coordinators = two coaches who have won 11 games in a season.

Vols need HC experience. Bring me Dooley! Bring me Butch! No one wants the job now except maybe Terry Bowden or Bob Davie. What about Frank Solich? He has experience. We can hire Tee as HC in waiting, which everyone knows he is not going to make a lateral move. It just gives people ammo to say “told u he loves the west coast more than Knoxville” BS again.

There is no sure thing except Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Gary Patterson, and Chris Petersen.

AND THERE IS NO CHANCE THEY WILL COME.

Lane Kiffin is a no go, unless you want to cost the university millions in dried up donations from even more angry boosters who had to clean up his mess.

There is no HR hire- there are only safe picks with low ceilings or risks.

For the first time in 30 years- it’s time for the Vols to take a risk.

You can’t go any lower than winless in the SEC and child molestation accusations painted on a giant rock.

Grow some testicles and do it.

Dooley and Butch was a risk

BECAUSE...

UT has had nothing but outsiders running the University for well over a decade now and you see what a cluster **** everything has become.

It is imperative to have TN people in charge of TN interests. Outsiders just don't get it. They don't understand the culture. The importance of athletics in regards to economy and overall morale.

It's MORE than just running a business.

There is a reason I can't hold a political office where I do not live.

The Haslams are not outsiders.

The Haslams are not outsiders.

No, they are those cousins that everybody can't stand, and never invites over, but they always seem to show up.

You know the type, they come over, the cops show up, want to know who run off without paying for the gas... It's all supposedly a "big misunderstanding", then the neighbors are talking.

No- they were desperate safe picks. They had a low ceiling, but were safer than a coordinator.

Hiring Dabo Swinney? That was a risk. Kirby Smart? That was a risk.

People want a VFL because they want to unnecessarily narrow the candidate pool and increase the odds of hiring a bad-mediocre coach. Because understanding our “culture” is more important than being a good football coach. Good luck with that philosophy. The two characteristics don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

I remember when Ohio State booted John Cooper and began a coaching search. All sorts of stuff about how their list should be nothing but either the hottest candidates around or Buckeye legends. There was a lot of support for the just-retired Chris Spielman, who promised to be little more than the emotional leader while leaving everything in the hands of his (already-assembled and VERY solid) coaching staff.

In the end, they went with Jim Tressel: a 1-AA head coach whose entire involvement with Ohio State consisted of three years as an assistant coach over 15 years prior. Tressel wasn't exactly Buckeye pedigree.

What he did do, however, was respect and embrace the tradition of the program. He kept the legendary players around, he said and did all the right things, and before long people forgot that he wasn't a Columbus native who had no ties to the school at all. He's very fondly remembered, on the same plane as those whose ties ran way deeper.

I don't think that a VFL is needed as the head guy. But I do think it's imperative that whoever the head guy is at least respect and acknowledge the great tradition, and continue to build upon it.
