Numerous report from Chicago media has stated that Lovie Smith has been contacted by UTK.

Yea I know, and Jesus, and Santa Claus. But who would not want Lovie? A great defensive mind, served under Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin at Tampa Bay. He runs the same defense that Monte used to shut down florida and Bama this yr. Tampa 2, which was actually created by Dungy and then Monte and Lovie then perfected it. He has been in 2 Super Bowls and has spent as much time in college as the pros. He is a stand-up guy and his work with the Bears his first 2 seasons when Grossman got injured was fantastic. Only when the Chicago organization started meddling in his affairs, firing his coaches, etc, did he begin to have problems succeeding.

Also considering the Chicago org. and fans want him out I believe there is more to this than many think. If this happens then all of us vols can feel relieved as our great program will be in good hands for the next 5-10yrs.

I am getting pumped just thinking about it.

I agree. Though there's a very small chance he's the guy, it at least gives me something to be excited about.

I wish this wasn't just a rumor like all the other non-Cutcliffe ones. It seems the Cutcliffe hire is inevitable. However, out of all the candidates named (maybe other than Gruden), Lovie is by far my first choice and I hope Hamilton can somehow pull this one off.

Another coach with zero college coaching experience. Also hasn't exactly been blazing a trail in Chicago lately, most of the town wants him out. I just don't see why we have to have a BIG name. Does it justify the Kiffin punking?

If we are going to take another chance on a unproven commodity then let's at least hire an up and coming DC or OC and save some money.

Im a Bears fan.

He's a disaster on so many levels. Terrible staffing decisions, and dear lord would he blow against the spread.

I hate him on the Bears...and I'd REALLY hate him in Neyland.

He has a 11 million dollar buyout and will expect ~4 million to coach. UT can't afford that, along with paying Fulmer 2 million not to coach.

Remember spring game last year before any of this recent stuff happened? How optimistic everyone was? Imagine if Lovie Smith were coaching rather than Slain Kiffin, who actually put together legit NFL seasons in the past with the Chicago Bears of all teams and was a great Defensive Coordinator. Recruits would line up to play for Lovie as opposed to most of the other candidates we are rumored to have

Yeah, we need a guy who was in a contract dispute over being the lowest paid coach in the NFL and has been on the hot seat for the last two years. I mean, who wouldn't want a guy that's won 52% of his games.

I'm really pumped about this one.

A college program would not be expected to pay that buy out. That's for NFL franchises only.

Besides, I think the 11 million number you're getting is the amount the Bears would have to pay him if they fire him which they wanted to do this year.

They'd be happy to let him just leave.

Every Chicago paper I read states that Chicago GM Phillips and owner McCroskey wanted Lovie out but that $11million buy-out was too much. So instead they fired his entire offensive staff, stripped his defensive play calling duties, and demoted his DC. Also, NFL is going to strike in 2011 and that is not a good environment for a coach on the move.

Also, if you have never seen or heard this guy, he would be an awesome recruiter. Well spoken and his demeanor commands respect.

Since when does being an assistant college coach for 12 years equate to "zero college coaching experience":shaking2:

I think we are all seeing one of the functions of search committees like the one Hammy hired. Major media smokescreens.

Remember last year when Spurrier and Butch Davis both had to "turn down" jobs they were never actually offered due to media hype?

Look at his record, he spent 15yrs in college before moving to the league, and 93-94 at UTK.

I don't buy the terrible coach statements. Look what he did his first 2 seasons with Grossman injured. And not all of the staffing decisions where his, Chicago org. was very involved. Don't forget Pete Carroll was an NFL bum before going into USC.

yea the $11mil is if they fire him, which may be a good reason for him to stay. And whoever said ut can't afford to pay him is insane, MH is flying the country with a blank check right now. Haslem is worth $800million and Clayton $620million, thats just 2 alums.

I should have been more specific, a few jobs as positions coach with the last one being 16 years ago. Nothing as a DC or HC. The NFL to college transition usually ends in disaster. Pete Carroll was one of the few exceptions.

His regular season record's better than Carroll's was and he's won more playoff games. Doesn't mean he's guaranteed to do well in college, but don't use his NFL record to rule him out.

You are one of the people on the internet that makes it even more unreliable. Show us where he has an 11 million dollar buy out. You are SUPPOSEDLY a guru, LOL. Lovie would be a STEAL at 3-4 million a year based on his defensive knowledge. He has more defensive knowledge than Saban. And, that is really making a MAJOR statement! Look at what Lovie Smith did for the Rams and Bears in a SHORT PERIOD of time!!!!!!! He may not be a coach to keep for 10-15years. But, he is certainly worth a shot for the near future!!!!!!!

Smith put together a great two year span and lets not forget his stint as DC for the Rams and a assistant under Monte with the Bucs. Im not saying he is a bad coach, im just saying is it worth the risk in finding out under our watch if he is a good college coach? How many high priced projects can this programs take before it crumbles?

Chicago got to a Superbowl with Lovie, enough said.

Saying that though, I don't think he'd necessarily want to leave the Bears because it's not exactly a doomsday scenario in Chicago. The NFC North is always winnable, and now that Cutler is finally showing results, they could surprise in 2010.

I'd rather Hamilton aim high with someone who has the potential to make UT great than hire someone like Cutcliffe where 7-8 win seasons will become the norm.

4yrs. Kiffin was a question mark, but we knew/thought that even if he didn't pan he would atleast stock pile talent. Lovie can bring in the talent, he is NFL guy, with good connections, a good track record, and pedigree. What high school kid wouldn't want to play for that? The question is do we go for a possible homerun with Lovie or look for a base hit with Cut?
