It's a super interesting question, 917, and a novel way of comparing coaches.

Trouble is, we have "the rest of the story" on the Dooley and Jones squads, but not on the Pruitt fellas: how they finished their season, finished up in college, and (for some of them) how they did in the NFL. So it's not (yet) a fair comparison.

Case in point: right now, few of us are feeling very good about anyone on today's team, other than To'o To'o and maybe a few others. Because we're losing, lately. And losing badly. But if the lads were to pull off a string of Ws, including one or two no one thought they could do (like say, Florida and A&M), we'd feel a lot more fond of them.

Will that happen? Probably not. Not the way things looked this past weekend. But you never know.

So it's kinda early for this type of comparison.

But it is a very interesting question, nonetheless. Be worth asking again after the season ends, or esp. in a couple of years.

It's a super interesting question, 917, and a novel way of comparing coaches.

Trouble is, we mostly know these lads for their on-field performance. And significantly, we have "the rest of the story" on the Dooley and Jones squads: how they finished up in college, as well as how (some of them) have done in the NFL. So it's not (yet) a very fair comparison.

So it's kinda early for this type of comparison. The Pruitt lads would suffer the comparison, badly, particularly compared to the 2015 squad that went 9-4 and ended up with several playing on Sundays.

But it is a very interesting question, nonetheless.
Its more about comparison of recruiting and development

There was some talent in that 2015 team. The fact Butch couldn’t do more with it hurts. That said, they would kill this years team. Only advantages I see is 2020 might have a better offensive line, and maybe linebackers in 2020 are better, but that one could be argue as pretty close.

I would take 2012 0r 2015 over 2020 LBs

*nod* I know. My point stands.

You know how D4H thinks he can almost magically assess individual players as future NFL prospects? Remember how delusional he sounds when he talks that way? Well, just about every one of us would be equally delusional (there are a few true coaches among us; they'd do it better, but still not to the level of a pro scout or college assistant coach).

We're not any of us what D4H thinks he is. We simply don't have the years and years of experience needed to hone that skill set.

So, we're judging with a view filtered through our own limitations. Which means a lot of what we see is just the Ws and Ls and our "feeling" based on how the team as a whole performed.

The current seniors, they are the closest to being eligible for a fair comparison. So if you wanted to say, for instance, that Dobbs turned out much better than JG, that makes at least some sense. But if you were to try to compare a freshman or sophomore, even a junior of today's squad with an NFL veteran from 2012, the comparison totally breaks down. We simply don't yet know how the younger fellas are going to turn out. Even turn out this season.

Which leaves the Pruitt lads at disadvantage, because they haven't yet turned in all their work. We're comparing a partial season and a partial college career's results for them against an entire college career and part or all of an NFL career for the earlier lads.

So it's simply not going to be a fair comparison.

I think 2012 offense with our current defense would have us in the SEC championship

Don't agree. People misremember that offense a lot. It didn't do a lot in a lot of meaningful games at the meaningful times.

Put Dobbs on this team and we win the East.

Read this on Basilio this morning. Matt Dixon write up. The overwhelming thing that jumps out is upperclassman talent in both 12 &15 the amount who would be on NFL Rosters. Other than Trey Smith Bryce Thompson Cade Mayes who right now is not playing at this level and maybe Josh Palmer and A Taylor , big difference in JR SR Class. For Jones he got his QB to decommit and sign with Vols and hit Gold with NFL In State Talent. Hurd, Malone, Barnette, Maybin. Hit some Legacy kids and then hit JC Gold with Karmara. The problem with Butch and Dooley they did not build a True Foundation so when this Talent exited it was Paper and not Brick. I love this Freshman Class as well as the Class committed on Paper and I believe Pruitt understands the foundation building of a team better. Yes I as a Vol Fan expect much better than the last 6 quarters of football but I believe by the end of 21 Season we will see his work behind the scenes of rebuilding a program from the ashes will pay off. In CHRIST Alone.

I think both the 2012 and the 2015 team would destroy us but JG would look good against that 2012 defense. An average offense was pretty much guaranteed to score on every drive. The 2012 offense would out outscore our 2020 team due to JG pick 6's.

2015 then 2020 then 2012. The 2015 had 10 win talent with 6 win coaching. The 2012 team had 8 win talent with 2 win coaching. The talent is not as good in 2020 but the coaching is far better than 2012 and probably similar to 2015.

I agree 100% no one seems to notice this is the worst Alabama team of the last decade, Georgia has no QB right now, and Florida has the worst defense it has ever had! Sad we can't take advantage of these facts.

As angry as I am about the product on the field this year, our coaching staff and players have had arguably one of the most challenging off-seasons in our lifetimes. Granted, COVID-19 has affected all teams but it has also affected our team's ability to close/decrease the gaps between us and our competition effectively leaving us in similar/worse shape as last year. I still think there's ZERO excuse for losing to Kentucky, but it's very difficult to compare this year three team to any year three team before it.

*EDIT* also, I think 2015 and 2012 would beat this team right now. By the end of the season, maybe this year's team could defeat the 2012 squad.

12 wins at WR, TE, and OL.

15 wins at QB, RB, DE, DT, CB, Sty, and P

20 maybe K if Cimaglia goes back to 2019 form.

LB is a toss-up between 12 and 15. AJ, CM were good. Lathers was solid. In 15 DK and JRM were really good. HT will end up being the best of the bunch if his trajectory stays the same.

So 15 wins this match-up for sure IMO.
