You know, the team that you have a feeling will probably be decent-to-good, then they end up being pretty good to really good. Like Arkansas last year, and heck I think '04 Vols would fit the bill too.

Anyways, Im going with South Carolina. Im not saying they'll win the east, but I can totally see them going 9-3, with all their defense returning and question marks with the big three.

If I had to pick one team in the west, I'd choose Bama.

Lost. They seemed to run out of steam at the end of the season. But they wouldnt have gotten as badly blown out as they did in the opener.

South Carolina will be starting a QB that couldn't beat out a dud last year. Plus his off the field problems - I don't see SC being very good offensively.

I'll say Oregon will be this year's Arkansas

What about this years Wake Forest? I'll keep it in the same conference and say North Carolina

didn't even think if you meant in D-1A or just the SEC if it's just the SEC then I'll say Alabama

The Wake Forest of the ACC would be either NC State or Virginia. As good as Butch Davis is, they'll struggle to win more than 4 games all season.

Look at it this way.

Evidently, Wisconsin > Arkansas.

Michigan > Wisconsin

USC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Michigan.

I'm gonna go with Tennessee, noone expects them to be more than decent, and I certainly think they've got a bigger upside than South Carolina. I don't think SC will win more than 8 regular season games. They'll find a way to botch up what could be a good year. Go ahead and put me down for having them at 7-5.

If I had to pick a breakout team from the SEC I'd go with Kentucky, just because they can put up some points this year. Other than that, I have the SEC as being same-ol-same-ol. A few teams in contention, a few spoilers, and a few bottom feeders.

It is interesting that Phil Steele predicted prior to last season that Arkansas would be last year's Arkansas, tapping them as the most improved team in the nation after 4 wins in 05. This year, he says the same thing about Alabama, actually referring to them as this year's Arkansas.

I also say Bama. Don't be surprised is they enter the LSU game in Nov with a shot at the West. If so, that game will be one to witness.

Good post. Hope it happens.

Mid tier bowl games are a worthless indicator. Michigan might have been hyped to try and prove the pollsters wrong, but were most likely going through the motions because they missed out on the title game. Arkansas, in the midst of a media firestorm, couldn't have cared less about UW game.

Regardless, USC was still >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Michigan

South Carolina and Alabama inthe SEC are good picks as "surprise" teams.

KY would be the ultimate sleeper though.

Definitely Carolina. Spurrier has had over 2 years with his guys and seems like its about time he starts turning some heads. Kentucky could surprise a few teams as well this year. I'm not saying that they'll win 10 games. But i'm fairly certain they'll be in the bowl picture yet again this year.

I don't think Spurrier can make USC a great team this soon. I mean, he's a great coach, but a head coach can only do so much. He can motivate talent, but he can't magically create depth or God-given ability. He'll lead well, and if USC is in a close game, be able to out-coach a lot of guys....but South Carolina just doesn't have what it takes to be a breakout team...not without an offense.

I am refreshing this thread of old for renewed discussion. I would like to say Ole Miss is my dark horse in the west. Not that I am so sure they will do much this year but if any of the not LSU or Auburn teams do anything. I think it will be them.
