they typically don't redshirt players at the very beginning of the season because they have no idea if injuries or other off-the-field problems will cause freshmen to have to play. Typically, bigdaddy is right. if you can get past the sixth game or so without playing, they will most likely try to redshirt you. That's not always the case. Basically anyone that you never see playing, is probably being held out for hopes of a redshirt. You can also petitition the NCAA for hopes of a miracle sixth season due to redshirting due to injury, etc. If we can find a good enough TE, i'd love to see if we can get Cottam a medical redshirt
