A few different threads have discussed the talent level for our week 1 game. Here is my shot of looking at it analytically.

Methodology:
1. I only care about the roster talent likely to play a significant role. So based on an abbreviated 2-deep for each team (39 players each team, no punters/kickers).
2. I used the 247 ranking system which uses the following point system.

100 - 98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 30 players in the nation.
97 - 90 = Four-star prospect. One of the top 300 players in the nation.
89 - 80 = Three-star prospect. One of the top 10% players in the nation.
79 - below = Two-star prospect.

3. If 247 did not rank a player, such as a transfer, I went to another ranking site and plugged in a number accordingly. I did this for 4 players.

Findings:
Here are the position group rankings.
avg rtg.JPG

Takeaway… in 7 out of 8 position groups UT is playing with 4 star talent. In 1 out of 8 position groups WVU is playing with 4 star talent. All position groups for both teams average 3 star or better, so neither is without legit D1 talent.

(Complete data sets to follow.) Thoughts?

Yea, but that was prior to getting to college, UT has been underperforming and getting judged by Butch Jones' lack of development. So let's say, we compare #Sr, #Jr, # So that are playing that are >=4 Stars.............what does that look like? Because I would give an adjustment to maturity and development of .05 to .10 in ratings.

I can honestly see the WVU game going either way. We usually do well against non conference opponents. If we win, I will not be surprised and if we lose I will not be surprised.
I think our bds will be the deciding factor in this game. Hope they play well

We may have more talent, but WVU has had 3+ years of actual coaching. We had five years of pure recruiting without any development. I don’t think Saban or Meyer could cover that coaching deficit in 9 months.
They have had better actual coaching??? Holgorsen is NOT a good coach...period!
Based on what...look at their record from 2014-2017.

Not at all disagreeing with you about lack of development from Jones and company, there’s no doubt about that.

However, we’re much more talented than WVa, a mediocre team that was 7-6 last year. I fully believe that a top notch coach, a strong coaching staff, can greatly improve this roster, certainly enough to beat a marginal, .500 team like WVa, in 9 months time.

I agree that there are talent equalizers in play.
1. Installation of completely new off and def systems for UT.
2. Coaching experience and continuity for WVU.

Honestly, I think this is about a pick'em game. If we win, it's a big deal and says a lot for the skill of our new coaches.

And....WV was crappy on defense last year and lost a ton of guys on that side of the ball if I am not mistaken.

I agree.
You and I about 80% of the time are aligned and it's as if you have written my post for me. This is one of these. My head and heart is about 60% thinking we boat race these guys next weekend. The national punditry has gotten my attention though, they're highly rating these guys for some reason that I just do not see. Grier pulled a rabbit out of his hat with Florida level talent end of game to beat UT previously, he doesn't have that this time. I don't think Pruitt puts a team on the field anywhere near as poor performing as what we saw last season. But there's always the possibility he does and if he does they romp us.

UT has advantage on raw tallent, but are learning new offensive and new defense. Also, WV QB and receivers have more experience together. Imho it will be surprising if we win.

To me, it seems possible that UT has more talent, but making an argument purely based off recruiting rankings is silly. UT's talent has far more to prove than WVU at this point. I think making the argument that we have more talent, ignores how poor our perceived superior talent performed last year. I understand we had Butch Jones and that certainly accounts for some of it but I feel like it's somewhere between coaching ineptitude and overrated high school talent. Hope I'm wrong, we will see next week

Yes, they were 7-6. But Grier was out the last three games. I don’t know if he would’ve won considering the last three teams were much tougher. But hypothetically this WVU could’ve been 10-3 last year.

Of course, we could’ve hypothetically been 7-5 last year. Football’s a funny game like that.

Holgorsen is better than Dooley or Jones. We have had 2 Pop Warner coaches on the sidelines since 2010.
