Who did we lose?

This thread is making an excellent point. We actually have more talent than last year. Trey Smith is back. Solomon from Michigan. More experience in key positions. There was absolutely no player loss that can explain why we are so much worse than last year.

You do realize that adding a large number of players to a system creates chaos until they are fully integrated. That is the case no matter how good they are. There is no seasoned core to help them learn the system and we have to let them learn through "trial by fire"

How can we expect to have a seasoned core when our coaches don't know what they are doing....

Unless you don't include the starting DL, our best DB, our third best DB, our best DT on the roster, and our best LB.

DL was expected to be an issue to begin with, DB and LB were not, even with all that the defense played well enough Saturday to win. The GA St game is on the coaching staff, even then we should've won by 20. Our complete offense came back, so that shouldn't be as bad as we've seen. The defense was a question mark, but again no one expected it to be this bad. So who exactly did we lose that wasn't expected that would cause a complete meltdown that we've seen so far?

What players did we lose to put us in this position? Last year’s squad wasn’t good by any stretch, but they ran circles around this year’s.
The entire defensive line to start. Then two starters in the defensive backfield and our starting MLB got injured or arrested. Add a garbage QB and this is how we are where we are.

Pretty sure we lost the entire starting DL from last year. But of course, the backups are always as good or better than the starters, right? It's just that coaches don't want to play the best players. They just enjoy losing that much.

Baylen, Bryce, Bituli? Gooden?

The defense did play well enough to win on Saturday. Gave up 225 yards in 59:43 of game time. That's pretty damn good.

Should they have gotten the stop at the end of regulation? Yes.

Should they have gotten the stop in OT? Yes.

Our QB returned is the issue.

I defended him some last year.
I said he struggled but we needed to see what would happen if he wasn’t running for his life all the time. I said we just didn’t know.

He’s had time to throw. He’s not running for his life. And he’s actually worse because of it.
Seems like a good kid but just doesn’t have it.

Time to try someone else.
If we have anyone

Why'd we lose? Long pass with less than a minute on THIRD DOWN Over everyone's head; except their receiver! Pretty clear . LOL. OH, he said WHO. Sorry.

So four players caused this massive regression? Come on man.

Should the QB be able to spot an open WR? Yes.

Did he spot his open WRs? No.

Did we leave points on the field because the QB couldn't spot his open receivers? Yes.

Did we leave points on the field because the QB seems to only throw behind his WRs? Yes.

We're bad, but four guys don't make so much of a difference that we can't score or move the ball.

I agree with you. Just saying that we did lose a lot of impact players on D. There's no excuse from the offense.

I truly believe (completely my opinion) that JG's issue has most to do with being shell shocked. Whether he had what it took to be good, or not, we will likely never know. For a large combination of reasons, he's lost the mentality. He lost the swagger. It just feels like he's scared out there, and you can never perform when you're scared.

He's also exceptionally bad in the red zone... which is the worst part of it all.

I just have to wonder what JG would have been like today if he hadn't been a human pinata for pretty much all his career at UT? Hell, I'd be gun-shy, too. I know he holds the ball too long, but we all watched the jail break allowed by the OL in previous years. We called it the "look out blocking scheme". I think it's pretty much ruined his head for the game/position. I know the coaches were shocked at his performance vs GSU because he'd looked so good in practice, but there he knew he wouldn't be hit. Maybe he can look into a grad transfer and find a school with a solid OL and QB coach to get him right in the head and maybe draftable or perhaps get a free agent deal when the time comes?

And the coach said it isn’t happening. Don’t have a QB any better. That’s what he said.

Its not so much about who we lost but who we retain...aka most of the 4-8/5-7 squad...(and JG)
