Who can replace Coleman?

He only has 8 more tackles than me in the last 39 years.
I don't know about you, but over the years I've had some pretty solid tackles of grandkids.

Sure, they weighed about 200lbs less than me and many of the tackles were negated by "unnecessary tickling" calls (the ref/wife fell for their squealing every time) but I got in some solid stops back in the day. I miss it.

No grandkids yet but my 2 decades of beating the boys on the court ended in the last year or so as my 18 yr old decided to run over me which resulted in immediate retirement.

I get it.

The young men won't deck Pops now because, well, mainly because a pissed off Pops probably won't give them any money and he weighs dang near 300lbs and is quite the load to pick up.... and he will hit you with his cane.

And the young grand-ladies are young ladies now and don't appreciate more than a side hug in front of their friends or "that boy" (who gets the mean mug from me because a big, bad Pops is never a bad thing for a young man to have in the back of his mind.)

What if you could’ve made $2m instead? Which would you choose?

The point is, the kid did the right thing. He’s obviously very concerned for his own health with concussion issues. There are things more important than football.

How many millions did Fulmer give his buddy Kevin Steele to do nothing for a month? Let’s be mad about that. Reworking his deal to $25k is a pretty unusual thing for a kid to do.
Very well said! One of our few rational fans..He absolutely could have held TN hostage and very possibly gotten his full payout. Our fans would rather bash a player instead of finding out the entire situation first. If he had been healthy, you can fake being miserable a few months to collect 2 million dollars. Him giving up that much money should be pretty telling..Sounds like the issues he continued to have after his head injury finally caught up with him. He supposedly preferred Basketball and football was never his favorite sport..Then his concussion and issues after was the final nail. I will be absolutely shocked if he ever plays football again.

Thank God some of our idiot fans are not the decision makers. They would have us in lawsuits regularly . I commend TN for how they handled this. I hope he's able to stay here and get his degree. Which also shows being homesick was NOT the issue.

I'll be honest I'm not looking at our depth chart right now, but who steps up on this team now that he is gone? Could you convert one of our LBs to play there?
Am I wrong in thinking that he hasn't been practicing? It's not like the defense would practice with only 10 players. They've plugged somebody in already. The kid has apparently been having big issues for a long time; if the staff really believed that he was going to suddenly straighten up and be The Guy, we are well and truly screwed.

Just because there’s someone out there lining up at EDGE doesn’t mean they’ll be good enough.

I’m not as bent out of shape as a lot of people are, life’s life and things happen, but the opportunity cost of it all does suck. Even if we couldn’t have retained Ross, being able to have added a high upside G5 guy would leave us in a better position.

It could absolutely be just bad luck and coincidence, but this is two offseasons in a row where we are unexpectedly replacing an expected starter at premium position. These are the type of missteps that make it hard to jump from good to great.

What is your basis for assuming he was going to be a difference maker if willing?

Why don’t we all wait till a depth chart is established and we have a few practices so we can enter the fact analysis mode? Owings may be tooling up a late bloomer as we speak. That happens too.

Like every player there was/is risk/reward. Same with fans. Dealing publicly with one player has exposed the negative potential of the other.

Heck no telling how we can use the money freed up by his departure!

I remain puzzled why Knowles was all-in on this kid who barely played at Penn State. I guess the premium was put on “he knew the system”. Otherwise what a complete fiasco.

Edge rushers aren't solely based off tackles. His pass rush grade is the more important factor and it was graded at elite. I'd imagine Knowles knew more than any fan what he had in Chaz. You don't have TN,LSU and Ohio St come at you hard in the portal iwith the type money he was offered if he sucked. I wish it would have worked out with him, but health is way more important than football.

It seems like our coaches are not panicking about this? 🤔

Ya know, on SDE side, we have Wethersby, and Dye. On Edge side, have Norman, and Gass.

Not enough? Ya know, as a true freshman, J.Pearce contributed, back then, and now, as highly regarded freshmen we have Golston, Harris, Groves, Gooden ... how many do you need to get in the mix?

Don't sleep on Gentle, a stout lad. And if that's not enough, Perlotte could definitely cheat up and get in that backfield. Maybe TJ White or J.Wyatt also. You realize, Owings is building them up, adding lbs. of muscle as we speak. 🤔

So, just on OUTSIDE of DL, I have named 11 or 12 ... How many do you think we need? 🤔

Never said he was a lock to be a difference maker, but if you’re acting like Knowles and Heupel brought him in and paid him a lucrative contract to not play a significant role in the defense, then I think you’re being a little disingenuous.

Waiting and hoping that someone surprises us and develops quickly into a quality edge player in a league full of NFL OTs is quite frankly not a great spot to be in at this point in the offseason.

And we know that money won’t be spent on the roster for the 2026 season since there are no more portal windows. That’s the point being made.

To be fair a lot more than Knowles wanted him in the portal. Other teams wanted him. Some others have tampered with him while he’s been here.
