Friends... take a read and tell me who, other than the most rumored and wished for possibility, could all that we've learned in the media be pointing to?
Currie stated that he is not hiring a search firm "at this time." This leads me to believe that he knows who he wants and has a strong indication that this person wants to coach the Vols. Who can this be?
Currie has spoken to at least the key committed recruits. One of those commits gave a detailed version of the call that seems credible. During this call, Currie intimated that the recruit would know who UT's coach will be in a matter of days. Not weeks... not a month... Days. This recruit expects to have substantial interaction with the Vols new coach in advance of the early signing period, with enough time to be able to make an informed decision about his future.
Given these two facts... along with an unconfirmed (but credible) quote attributed to Currie stating that the new hire would be "explosive & expensive"... who could it point to?
I can't think of an NFL coach, currently employed, who Currie could be certain of luring to Tennessee within "days" who would fit the "explosive & expensive" scenario. Any currently successful NFL coach, even an assistant, is gearing up for a playoff run, right now. Those guys expect to be coaching at their current gig until well into January. Who would be a possibility, from the NFL, to drop what they're doing, take the UT job and start talking to recruits? (I'm sure there is someone... I just can't think of who that would be.)
By the same token... which successful college coach could Currie have in mind?
Dan Mullen? Probably not. He is gearing up for a bowl game at MSU and you have to think that UT would be competing with Florida, to land him. If I am Currie, and Dan Mullen is my guy, there is no way that I would be so cock-sure that I could convince him to leave MSU AND coach here, instead of Florida.
Scott Frost? Again, gearing up for a bowl game and no way I'd be that certain to land him with his alma mater dangling out there.
How about ANY of the currently employed, successful head coaches who have been the subject of rumors? Currie seems to have been working on "someone." To speak with a coach currently employed at another school, you'd have to assume that he has been given permission to speak to the guy by whomever the prospect is working for. That means, more than two people (Currie and whoever + somebody) knows about it. This is 2017... It would have gotten out. As far as I know, no media has reported that Tennessee is rumored to be talking to this guy or that guy.
So... Currie knows who he wants. Somehow, he knows that this person wants to come here and coach the Vols. Whoever this is... it's going to cost big bucks and make a big splash, when it's announced. And... given what has been said that can be confirmed... it is highly unlikely that this person is currently employed as a head coach.
I can only think of two people. "You know who." And Chip Kelly. (Charlie Strong keeps being mentioned... but he wouldn't be costly or splashy. He is less than a year from being fired, for goodness sake.)
What am I missing?
