Take Neyland and Fulmer out of the equation and the vols are an average team. 1998 was 22 years ago. We make fun of UGA and 1980, 40 years ago, historically we are average without two all time great coaches and those of us spending our adolescent years during the golden era of modern vols football 90-03-ish.....we were spoiled with false expectations. Unless we stumble into a Hall of Fame coach I am not sure we ever get there again in the next 10+ years. I know I must be great at parties. Take the wins and take the losses as they come and if good times come make sure to enjoy while they last. Sorry Mr. Positive here but man been a long 15 years.

Doug Dickey did a very good job the few years he was here. Battle snuffed his success in about 3 years.

What? Every coach who was here for at least 4 full seasons from Neyland to Fulmer finished in the AP top 5 at least once. They all signed great recruits and coached All-Americans. John Barnhill coached 4 seasons in the 40s and Tennessee was #1 in the nation in winning percetange while he was coaching those 4 years. Doug Dickey coached 6 years here and won 74 percent of his games, finished in the top 5 and was 9th in the nation in winning percentage during that stretch. Bill Battle won 73 percent of his games in his Tennessee career and finished in the top 5, 11th in the nation in that period among power conference schools. Johnny Majors in 16 years as head coach was 18th in the nation in winning percentage, won multiple SEC championships and finished in the top 5 multiple times.

Butch is the only coach who spend more than 4 seasons here without a top 5 finish in the last 100 years. Good grief. We aren't average, without our two winningest coaches we are still a top 20 winningest program in CFB history. Our fans just have extreme recency bias

Majors won three SEC championships at UT, Battle won 10 or more games 3 out of 7 seasons and was 4-1 in bowl games, Doug Dickey won the SEC twice in six seasons. Put the crack down

Take Ray Mears, Rick Barnes and Bruce Pearl out of the equation and we suck at basketball too.

Bowden Wyatt had several good years, was number one in the nation a while in 1956.

you still have seven conference championships and one claimed national championship without the General and Fulmer.

there's the rub. are we going to be the next ole miss and fall off the face of the earth for 50 years or will we keep swinging for the fences and work our way back into the top 10?

We are a top 10-15 program. What is your point? No one is claiming we are top five or better but we sure as heck are better historically than the crap we have endured the last 15 years whether you agree with it or not.

Our problem has been we have been going after a bargain basement coach. Trying to find the next group of 5 HC or coordinator who is going to be a great coach. When bama went after Saban he turned them down till they made him an offer he couldn't refuse. We need to do the same. UT is still in the top 5 in revenue(at least the last time I saw the numbers we were) so there really is no excuse to not spend the money. I don't however see them firing Pruitt, paying his buyout and hiring a proven HC at this level.
