Who actually calls the plays?

Well you cannot rush if you cannot pass the ball..hard to rush against a loaded box..we need more downfield passing to open the rush up...under neath stuff does not cut it..we need passes of 20 plus yards downfield to open up the run game..even if they are incomplete...teams need to know we will go deep if need be...GBO

Excellent point, we have to throw deep, even if incomplete, we have to get the safeties off of the line of scrimmage. If we have to keep a tight end and an extra back to block, we have to throw deep. Throwing a 3 yard pass on third and 10, will never work, nothing good can come out of this

It does seem like so many of our plays are mailed in. When Hurd keeps running up the middle for no gain, or rolling out and getting tackled at the line of scrimmage, over and over again, something should change. Stick John Kelly in there and let him do his thing.

When Butch hired DeBord, it felt like he wasn't willing to give up his offensive philosophy. So he hired someone that understands or shares same offensive ideas.

But my question is, does CBJ ever call plays?

If not, maybe we should have Co-Coordinators. A rushing specialist and a passing specialist.

Our rushing attack is our strength. Maybe we need to change our direction in the way we call passing plays.

Interesting that nobody here seems to really know the answer to this question because the unknown person or group that is sending in the plays better really understand defenses as well. And while we have had our share of injuries this year, someone and or a group of coaches need to assess our strengths & weaknesses, read the defensive schemes and call a play in about 4 seconds.

I am not a Kiffin fan at all but DeBord and staff were severely outmatched on Saturday.

Who is reading the Defense and calling our plays??

Brand new to the board and excited to discuss Vols football. Not looking forward to the beat down I'll probably get for expressing my opinion but I'm a big boy haha.

My football I.Q. may not be as high as some people on here so I'll get that out of the way first. The first few games I think I bought into the theory that the coaches weren't wanting to show their hand as far as game plans. I have since realized that was completely false. I think people obviously overrated and over looked our deficiencies at O-line in the preseason. I was also originally on the fire Debord train as well.

However, after watching the season play out I really wonder how much freedom Debord has to run his plan. I am beginning to think the first half of the game CBJ tells him what he wants. And in the second half Debord has more freedom and puts up very respectable numbers against very good defenses (mainly FU and aTm).

I'm not a big fan of looking towards next year bexcuse I think our team needs our support and positive attitude RIGHT NOW. But I am interested to see if a QB with a better arm opens up the offensive play calling more (no offense to Dobbs because I think he is a huge reason why we still have a shot at going to Atlanta). If next year we are still running up the middle for 2 yards every 1st down then I will agree that people way smarter than me need to start asking questions as to why.

Until then we need to get behind our team and push them to the goal line which is the SECCG. These next few weeks will not be as easy as we thought they would be back on September 1st. Go Vols!
