White tops out in bonus pay, Knecht takes cut

If West is being snarky about White's incentivized bonus pay, he needs to expose himself to what CEOs in the private sector make for far lower performance--even negative performance.

We are rewarding success and keeping a rare talent at the head of our athletic department. And it appears we are checking all the right human values boxes along the way.

Handling success is a different animal. Time will tell. But so few ADs are achieving on the pace Danny has, and so far without sketchy methods.

To be fair, West needs to give complete information and show the return on investment for the sports program this year. I’m certain AD White’s compensation is a bargain.

"But you misread, my meaning when I met you" Marvin West is the last guy to cast negativity on UT Sports. He is a VFL; UT Degree from the 1950"s era. He is often misunderstood. To be fair, I didn't arrive at the same conclusion.

You guys totally don't get Marvin West. He is an old school spinster, UT Grad, and a great writer. I don't know how he is so misunderstood. West Loves UT, totally, including Danny White and the job he is doing.

I've heard some of that against West on Volnation, which I always took with a grain of salt. Lots of fans only want the media to match or exceed their own enthusiasm.

But having not read West much at all, my response was purely to the article, which never really stated a point or conclusion, but did seem to anticipate some outrage or offense at the facts he stated.

I'd sincerely love to hear a more knowledgeable take on what the writer was getting at, especially if I misrepresented it.

I'm a huge fan of old time newspaper reporting, and always on the lookout for some new people who are willing to rediscover it. Last night, after listening to a Tucker Carlson interview of Matt Tiabbi, I watched 1952's "Deadline-USA" which laments the then already evident decline in competing newspapers, and contains many bits of homage to Joseph Pulitzer.

Pulitzer, a Hungarian immigrant, died before WW1. But he clearly saw what was happening:

"Money is the great power today. Men sell their souls for it. Women sell their bodies for it. Others worship it. The money power has grown so great that the issue of all issues is whether the corporation shall rule this country or the country shall again rule the corporations."

Best sports writer ever in Knoxville. He researches everything before it put it into print and he is head and shoulders above any other so-called sports writer in the modern Era.

A more knowledgeable take? All I can say further is that you read the piece, I read the piece, and came to different conclusions. Marvin closed the story on Dr. White with "Most see Dr. White as a rousing success in his job. Donations are considerable. You don’t suppose he is underpaid?" I gave you a "knowledgeable take" since I am well acquainted with the Man and his writings. I can only recommend a commitment from you to read more Marvin West to gain further insight.
