Is Newton more difficult to contain or is Russell? If its Newton then we know a little more and should be better prepared.

there is no doubt in my mind that russell is a better passer.....i think newton is a slightly better runner but they are comperable (this is likely due to the fact that newton never got a lot of reps as a QB before this year)

Russell is no where near Newton in escapability or quickness. He's a pocket passer with a rocket arm.

Frankly, I'd rather play against Russell than Newton (with Spurrier calling the offense).

I am curious to know if this thread was started (this question was posed) purely because both QBs are African-American? Russell is big and if he runs then he is tough to tackle, however, he is not a mobile quarterback. Newton is a wide receiver who can throw the ball.

No,why would you think that?

He has 23 yards on 22 carries so I would say running probably isn't one of his strengths. He has a cannon for an arm though.

I heard a couple people say that and I was trying to figure out where people got that Russell was a mobile QB. As far as mobility goes he's slower than Leak which is saying something. The difference is he's just huge and really hard to tackle so he will get a few extra yards being 6'5 260 pounds. He barely ever looks to run when he moves out of the pocket, but the danger he presents is he has amazing touch and accuracy on the run and probably the strongest arm in college football.

My thoughts exactly.

Russell makes me think of Steve McNair, which is possibly why a large number of people anticipate him being a runner. You can't say he isn't MOBILE, I think he is... it just isn't his strength. He's a pocket passer for sure. He still does well on rollouts. I'd also compare him to a former LSU QB, Rohan Davie.

I dont think it was a racist thread, I think people might be a little oversensitive. Seemed like a valid point to me. Ya know there is going to come a time when political correctness will make it impossible to say or write anything. As far as russell being mobile, if he can walk and is 6'5" and weighs 260 I would consider that a pretty tough challenge to tackle. I think Newton is a better scrambler, but our guys havnt been tackling that well lately, and with his size he might be able to do just enough to get the pass off.

Russell is mobile in that he can scramble and evade the rush. But he is not a running quarterback like Tebow. 23 yards on 22 carries means that he is not getting sacked much.

I think it is because UT played SC last week and play LSU this week, and because Newton raised a few eyebrows. People are looking for some comfort going into the LSU game.

Thank you , if it was Tebow we played I would have said who is harder to contain Tebow or Newton.

He does overthrow alot and he isn't clutch. He isn't a great runner at all, but isn't easy to sack because of his size.
