Which Players Do We Lose

I wonder if coming here gets Velus and Payton paid? Payton seems like he's had a great year compared to his career.

I am sure it’s helped their draft stock. The NFK scouts have had to see their abilities on the field. I hope Payton’s injury doesn’t hurt his chances.

Cade Mays
Carvin (I think)
Alonte Taylor
Theo Jackson
Aubrey Solomon
Matthew Butler
Javonte Payton
Velus Jones

We can't lose Carvin AND Mays. That would stink. I'm selfishly hoping that HH has a meeting with these guys and tells them he's coming back and he wants all of them to come back (with the exception of Jones and Payton on offense).

Velus yes. Payton... hard to tell. He wasn't featured at MSU and while Leach's system puts up a ton of yards, it's not as predicated on the deep strike as Heupel's system is so Payton likely made the best move possible.

For reference: Miss State WRs with over 350 yards (5) have long rec of 42, 29, 34, 21 and 43.

UT WRs with over 350 yards (3) have long rec of 70, 72 and 75.

Payton has 15 rec all year (surprised me) for a blistering 24.9ypc and 6 TDs. That's some insane production.

Has Cade said he isn't coming back? My orange colored glasses are hoping that he wants to come play another year with his brother.

My guess is it would depend on his grade. If he's graded as a 1st or 2nd he should leave. Anything less and he should come back as I think a better year with a productive offense would benefit him immensely in his grade.

His PFF grades against big-time opponents hasn't been good. He was a 59.4 against UGA and he's only scratched 70 against UK, USC and Mizzou which aren't world burners.

as much as I want him back, I feel like going if he's a 1st or 2nd rounder would be better for him. Best not to risk it to injury or something else that could happen

I know it's Walter Camp, but they have him as a 7th-FA

11/13/21: Mays is playing right tackle for Tennessee. In the NFL, his best fit might come at guard.

7/3/21: Mays played well in the first few games of 2020 before really struggling against Georgia. He was at right tackle for the Volunteers, but he looks like a guard for the next level, and that is how he is listed on NFL teams' preseason watch list.
Mays was a decent starter on Georgia's all-star offensive line in 2019 and could have been the replacement for Andrew Thomas at left tackle for 2020, but Mays decided to transfer to Tennessee. After being a top recruit, Mays started seven games as a freshman in 2018 for the Bulldogs while also dealing with injuries. With his versatile size, Mays could fit at guard or tackle, and it will be interesting to see where he settles in at Tennessee. Mays is a strong run blocker with good size to create a push at the point of attack.

Cade Mays, Right Tackle -Tennessee
Cade Mays would be a guy I would like to see the Pittsburgh Steelers take a chance on in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL draft. Mays stands at 6’6” and weighs 325lbs and is draft-eligible after this season. If the Steelers want to improve their offensive line next year, this could be their guy.

In 7 games, Mays has been a good pass blocker at the right tackle position. Tennessee has thrown the ball 190 times this year and Mays has been almost perfect with his blocking. He has not allowed a sack or even a hit on the quarterback through 7 games. He has only allowed three hurries on the quarterback which gives him an impressive 99.1 % efficiency rate.

As a run blocker, Mays has played in every snap when the ball is in the running backs’ hands. He has only drawn 2 holding calls in 179 runs this year. Tennessee has been one of the best rushing teams in the nation this year averaging 226.0 yards a game. They are currently ranked 15th in rushing in all of college football and Mays is a key reason why. The Steelers should consider drafting him in next year’s draft.

Mays would grade much higher at guard. He’s not an nfl tackle. He’s also playing through injuries this year. It’ll be interesting to see what he does. Given the weird variables— playing out of position, injuries, having a brother on the team, team loyalty etc., I don’t think it’s black and white. If he goes, a smart team will move up to fill a guard spot. No way this kid languishes past day two. It’d be great if he stayed. He’s so important in both pass and run game. As a guard, he is a three yard contract for every run. I’d love to see a portal tackle come in to
Let him knock out the 2 hole.

To graduation/elegibility expiring?

Looking to next year and who we need to replace.

these are the 9 super seniors on the roster this year.

Blakeley
Bumphus (he is going to redshirt and can return)
Butler
George
Jackson
Jones
Payton
Solomon (he has a redshirt available and due to how much he has played, could take it. I doubt UT wants him back though)
Tremblay

Other players likely not coming back (speculation on these) that do have eligibility available.

Cade Mays going to NFL
Evans
Mitchell

There will be other players hit the transfer portal but too early to speculate on who that might be. There are also several others that may decide to try to go pro but too early to speculate on those.

Evans would seem to benefit massively from another year in this offense especially since the ankle injury basically has taken him out of that back half of the season. Unless grades are an issue, this one seems odd

not sure but suspect he will. His plan is same as Evans. Was only intending to be here one year.

He's also in the same boat with Evans then. Little to no production, got injured.

Why do these guys think an NFL team is going to draft them if they can't even crank out production and stay healthy in college?

Especially at RB. You have to nail your rookie contract because most struggle to make it and be resigned.

Mitchell and Evans would be foolish to leave imo. Evans might go mid to late round. Mitchell would be a UFA or practice squad at best, esp since he hasn't played much.

They both could be the featured players at their respective positions next year and significantly raise their value in the draft (barring injuries). Should be a much improved team too, assuming Hooker stays, which should only help them in the draft

JMO

I don't believe either of these kids care about college. Don't care about going to class. Its more about what they prefer doing today than their future.

If NFL happens they would be happy but not sure they really care..
