I love Bruce Pearl. And you all know the reasons why. He's created this program from nothing. He deserves mega props for everything that he's done for us, the fans.

Jujuan, Lofton, Bradshaw, and Howell all deserve praise for helping to make this program anything. They have given people a reason to watch Tennessee basketball, and have made the past three seasons big successes.

But...

Is Bruce Pearl the coach that is going to win us a national title?

The part of me that says yes blames this all on the fact that he's had to develop some players that, though hardworking, really have low talent and just can't physically do certain things. In developing these players (the seniors) and winning right away he's had to give less time to the development of the talent he has brought in, and we will see dramatic rise in consistency of Ramar, Prince, and Chism next year, and we'll see much much less boneheadedness and much more emphasis on solid halfcourt offense and defense. We'll play more "legit" defense (still plenty of steals, but maybe some blocks and low shooting percentage as well), and we'll get that elite eight or Final Four next year or 2010. Bruce will bring in a top five recruit or two soon, and will continue his pattern of 24 wins every single year, with one of them having the talent and the means to get that title. Bruce leaves after 10 more years, with 4 SEC titles and 1 or 2 national.

The part of me that says no is that no one ever ever wins in the postseason with the Bruce Pearl style of play, Jurick isn't a scoring big man, and we'll always have shaky inconsistent players who don't know how to shoot outside of five feet. Chism and T. Smith will be good, but won't have the backcourt or perimeter shooting behind them in order to win now, and they'll be gone soon enough. Bruce won't have the type of season or prestige that helps recruit the Derrick Rose type of player, and it will cost us. We'll have the talent to get 30 wins, with 4 stars across the board, but 5 Stars will be convinced they can't get a title here. Scotty Hopson will pick Mississippi State. Kentucky and Florida combined will give us 3 losses a year, and we'll be frustrated as Bruce Pearl turns into Fulmer.

A little dramatic and short sided on both sides, but tell me. Do you guys believe that Bruce Pearl is a National Title coach, just an SEC Championship coach, or something else, and why?

If Nolan Richardson and Jim Harrick can win National Championships, Bruce, with the right players, certainly can.

See Rick Pitino and Nolan Richardson

Honest Question: Were Arkansas's teams as high-flying and press dependant as Pearl's are?

I've only been a basketball fan for 5 or 6 years, but it seems to me like Pearl has been touted as the extreme of the Tom Davis style, which historically doesn't win big. Pitino I know settles it down with a Big Man inside and solid guards.

Dear god... we hadn't won a championship before him, and we probably won't win one after him. Can you at least give the guy some credit for what he's done up to this point?

Someone is pressing the panic button a little early.

More, the big difference was that they had the Big Nasty Corliss Williamson who was a halfcourt offense by himself. They would just post him up hard, spread out, and let him go to work. We have no half-court offense as of now.

no. those teams had started backing away from 40 minutes of hell to some extent. Plus, the title team pounded the rock to Corliss and played nasty halfcourt D.

Pitino followed the same pattern at KY

Which is exactly the pattern this team is following...

Yes, and I did at the very beginning before I asked the question.

Again, (and rephrased) do you think Bruce Pearl's style of play and recruiting will one year put a team together that is better than anything the other great established basketball coaches can put together? Roy Williams won it all in his third year at UNC, albeit with much better talent.

You have to be joking. He had 4 future lottery picks in cupboard when he came.

The team on the Hill obviously needs to recruit some inside presence to get over the hump. Does anybody on here know where we can find a pair of seven foot twins like they have at Stanford?

They cloning machine in Justin Guarini's basement would be a good place to start

2003 was the year for him at Kansas. If Wayne Simeon hadn't gotten hurt they would've beaten Carmelo and the Orange without a doubt in my mind.

Yeah, because Simeon has been so much better than Carmelo since then. Come on, this is total bs.
Simeon was always overated.

Wow. Just. Wow. Complete and utter imbecility.

Simeon was much better than whoever they had in for him at forward and forced Nick Collison to play all 40 minutes in the final 3 games of the tournament. It wasn't comparing Simeon to Melo in any way, just the depth and stabilty of a very good collegiate player like Simeon would've been the difference in an extremely close game. Remember, the game wasn't decided until Hakim Warricks block of the Michael Lee three-pointer at the buzzer.

You really are an imbecile. Hemroid had 4 freakin' lottery picks on that squad. Tyler Smith is the only first round possibility on this team right now.

Yeah, a little difference in what Roy and Bruce inherited. But hey some people may rather have had Dane Bradshaw, Major Wingate, Stanley Asumnu, and Andre Patterson.

This has been bugging me...but it was his 2nd year at UNC not 3rd...

I actually thought so, but am too lazy to look it up.

And Roy did choke at Kansas a few times. I was simply addressing the fact that some idiot is trying to compare Roy's immediate success at UNC to what Bruce has done here thus far.
