Where UT basketball needs improvement

With regard to the former, I think you are more correct than I am, though in theory if you on defense are not getting rebounds and people are in tight to the basket when they pull down a board and put it back up, their FG % is likely to go up, and your FG % defense likely to go down.

With regard to the latter, if you read my initial post I said that it had been my impression that last year you were weak there and I went and looked at the stats to see if I was right. I don't claim to be a genius for making the observation -- I was just ponying up some proof of what a lot of us thought, Vols fan or otherwise.
Our FG % D is because we play atrocious halfcourt D and we give up tons of man advantage breaks because of the full court pressure.

As to the middle of the floor, clearly our weakness last year that I fully expect to be better this year. It won't be where we need it, but it will be improved.

GREAT.

Almost automatic from the FT line. Made some monstrous blocks.

This team is different than last year for two key reasons:

1. More shooters: lose Bradshaw for 25 minutes, add Tatum and Tyler Smith who can shoot. Also, Tabb improved his jumper. Less cold nights for the team in general.

2. Brian Williams: if he's what the coaches are saying he is, he'll rebound the hell out of the ball, and that allows Chism and Childress to be matched on other 4s.

We can't get past it because you even starting the thread is odd. It's like you think you have more bball insight than some of the regular Vol posters here.

These stats you bring up are things we were aware of during that season, almost 10 months ago.

What we need ot improve on is our winning pct against Florida. 3-1 over the past two years just isn't good enough. :)

The comparisons between Crews and Wingate do not extend any further than their obvious similarties in off-court habits. Crews is a junk man with athleticism and no skill set. He is also not very good on defense. Wingate was a very solid defender. He got most of his point on post ups. Crews is a solid rebounder. Wingate sucked at rebounding. Crews has great hops. Wingate had no hops.

Well I'd say that starting 2 freshmen every game was a significant cause for our defensive troubles. As for rebounding, Dane Bradshaw is 6-4 playing the 4, and Chism was a 6'9" freshman playing center. Duke Crews came off the bench at only 6'7" for the center spot, and he could work on his rebounding. Both defense and rebounding will improve with the adition of Tyler Smith, B. Williams, and another year of experience for Chism and Crews.

defense and rebounding are both about state of mind, positioning and concentration. Youth might matter a little bit, but it's more of an excuse than anything. We didn't put a very high premium on either last year. I would expect that to change this year, but I'm going to withhold judgment until I've seen it.
