If my count is correct, it looks like the 2008 roster will only have 38 Vols who were rated 4 stars or higher coming in.

In comparison Florida will have 63 (I think, heavy attrition there), LSU will have 56 after the loss of RP, and even Bama will have 44 after adding 24 in only one class.

This doens't bode well for a turnaround, imo. 06 and 08 classes are killers to the talent pool.:hmm:

Maybe, but the stars aren't the be all and end all of football players being able to play the game. CPF will just have to "coach 'em up"...

Good point.

As you mentioned, the recruiting classes last season and after the 05 season are hurting.

Now Tennessee faces the challenge of playing Florida when they have the better athletes. The fact Fulmer is 0-3 vs Meyer when he probably had the better athletes does not hold well for the future IMO.

I think that our needs are filled besides the d line. We had a tremendous crop of freshmen in 07 that will keep this team strong for a few years. Although a few other SEC teams have more 4 stars or 5, we have talent at each position and I think this will be our most talented team in probably 6 or 7 years.

we haven't had better athletes since UM has been there. His teams have been solid on at least one side of the ball.

Give me a break. We are just as talented as the rest of the SEC. The only place of true concern is DL, but every team has at least one weakness.

I don't think we were more talented than their national championship team...

This is an easy question. We dropped down a few years with mediocre results when we did have lots of talent. We used to be able to get a handful of Georgia recruits that we wanted and Richt has put up a fence around Georgia for the most part. Saban and Tubberville are bringing in the best from Alabama and Meyer is doing the same in Florida. Heck, Bowden/Spurrier are closing up South Carolina as well.

We need to recruit mostly out of state and we have been missing out on recruits because their homestate university finally has some coaches that know how to recruit and win.

i could careless how many 4/5 star players we have as long as we are winning. Besides, a players stock changes rather quickly from highschool to college. I'm not worried about it.

The gap in talent that's happened the last 3 years has never been as large since Fulmer has been HC at Tennessee IMO.

We won't win against Florida if we don't play with A LOT more discipline on defense. Our tackling skills went down the toilet late in the third quarter in that game.

Hopefully, Chavis has that fixed.

i agree that stars look good and help. it goes back to the coaching and how a player responds etc. but those of you worried about our recruiting, i think clawson and his crew will have that turned completly around in next 5 years. i believe we have very good recruiters now, young and energetic that kids like to talk to and play for and their new success we have coming our way will all make a difference but it takes time. i agree with all the stats put up and thanks to yall that did that. i agree with everything posted thus far but we're coming back. and for god sakes i hope not in black neither! we will be there. and if we get 2 stars,3 stars or no stars and they are off radar but can play and will work hard and be coached then we make them stars. thats what its about. not well everyone else has stars, oh god we're ranked last in recruiting again, i'll support my team but oh god everyone's better than us. then, everyone cheers when we are doin good. stars are over rated, and give us somethin else to b*tch about!

i like scotty hopson and he has 5 stars! but he plays basketball:good!:

. . .havn't really checked lately but I know UT used to recruit heavily in New Jersey. Pa. has not been bad either. Heck, I live in College Park, and in the Terps backyard, and Maryland doesn't recruit well in their own backyard!! Get some UT scouts up here!!!

Well this years class is shaping up to be pretty good thus far if we can get some linemen.

Tennessee does have as much talent in their starters as those other teams do, however the 2nd and 3rd team players are less talented star-wise than the Florida's and LSU's.
