Where Do The Vols Rank In SEC Last Three Years

Since 2005 here are the win / loss records for the sec schools.

1. LSU = 33-6
2. Florida = 31-7
3. Georgia = 29-9
4. Auburn = 28-9
5. Tenn = 23-14
6a. Arkansas = 22-15
6b. Alabama = 22-15
8. South Carolina = 21-16
9. Kentucky = 18-18

bottom three didn't matter

During mid to late 90's we were usually the second best team in the conference. Now we've slipped to middle of pack and with Alabama, Arkansas and possibly South Carolina on the rise, we may be in bottom half of league real quick.

Have you been under a rock or something for the last three years? I don't think this is news to anyone especially when factoring in the worst year Tennessee has had in over two decades.

Major Conference Programs With Better Records Than UT over last three seasons. 27 Major Conference schools have an equal or better record over three years than Phil's Vols. Just pointing out to the folks that think we're still an elite program under Fulmer - look at how many "mediocre" programs have had better past few years.

USC = 32-5
Ohio State = 33-4
Texas = 32-6
W. Va = 32-5
VT = 32-7
Oklahoma
Rutgers = 25-11
Ariz St = 24-13
Missouri = 26-12
Wiscy = 31-7
*Oreg. St = 23-14
*UCLA = 23-14
S. Fla = 24-13
Kansas = 24-12
L'ville = 27-10
Oregon = 25-12
Texas Tech = 25-12
Cal = 24-13
Penn St = 28-9
Michigan = 27-10
BC = 28-9
Clemson = 25-12
Fla = 31-7
Auburn = 28-9
Ga = 29-9

2005 was an aberration if you look at a larger picture. You don't want to do that so you can make your negative point though. What about the last two years? Those aren't elite, but it takes out the 5-6 season. Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Take out the 5-6 season and yes our #'s look much better but the 5-6 season did happen so you can't not count it. Gotta take the good with the bad..

I'm just trying to point out to the folks that think we're in good shape w/ Fulmer where we rank among our peers. We have dipped quiet a bit, more than I actually thought before I looked at the records.

I mean Missouri, Kansas, S. Fla, Clem, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Rutgers, etc when all those schools have better records than you over a three year period then you're not in the upper echelon like we SHOULD BE.

You were probably one of the ones who used to always complain about people using the 98 season in their comparisons.

No one here is going to argue that Tennessee has been an elite program the last few years.

I'm not defending anything. That would be a better stat to throw out, but everyone knows it is terrible. Choosing the last three years specifically is just arbitrary. And there is an outlier if you look at the whole decade. It is obvious why it starts at 2005.

I wasn't starting w/ '05 b/c the season we had, what we did 7 yrs ago don't really matter, what we did 3 years ago is much more frsh on people's mind. The last three years are what is important for any program/coach and the current state of the program, the current state of any team's program isn't what they won many years ago, its what they have won recently. Kinda like the "what have you did lately" deal, no need to go back any further than three seasons. Next year when the 5-6 season is an even more distant memory you can look at where we stand.

We live in a ADD society now, all most people know is we lost to Cal, UF, & LSU if your lucky they'll remember we beat UGA.

1998 wasn't as extreme compared to our years prior. I wouldn't include it in this anyway. It is from the "glory days." I'd still say a 5 win season with no bowl is extreme for this decade and throws everything off. Whereas 11-2 instead of 13-0 wouldn't make very much difference over a 5-10 year period. Of course, if we lose to Wisconsin and lose 5 games the numbers start to look better (worse) at an average of 5 losses per year over three years. The win column is way off though.

First of all, I think we can all agree that the Vols are not where we want them to be.

But I think we should only be comparing regular season conference records. A team shouldn't be punished for winning it's division, and a team like Georgia shouldn't be rewarded for never leaving home and always playing out of conference creme puffs.

Over the last 4 seasons which includes the miserable 2005 season, the top half of the SEC standings look like this:

Auburn 26-6
LSU 25-7
GA 22-10
Tenn 21-11
Florida 21-11
Arkansas 16-16

For the last two seasons:
LSU 12-4
Florida 12-4
Tenn 11-5
Auburn 11-5
Arkansas 11-5
GA 10-6
