Former Vol Benedict makes most of second chance

Tennessee has experienced its share of whiffs the last few years in its search for offensive linemen. Heath Benedict was one of those can't-miss prospects when he signed in 2002, but was more interested in partying than pass protection. He's since resurfaced at Division ...

one of the biggest recruiting busts of all time imo, the only one greater? Brian Darden.

OJ Owens and Darden are at the top

Heath is a bust but not near the top. He wasn't even the biggest OL bust in that class. Brandon Jeffries was like the #2 OT in that class. Benedict is at least doing something footballwise.

If I recall correctly, he said something mean to a woman and her daughter at a restaurant. I may be wrong though.

Benedict was an All-American at Newberry and was a NFL draft prospect. I don't think he was drafted and don't know if he signed for anybody, but he's not a bust, it just didn't work out here.

OJ Owens was a huge bust, man, I remember watching his video and thinking this guy had to be a future AA. Darden though, broke my heart, there was so much hype about him and that was at a time Tennessee wasnt pulling in the 5 start guys the way we have in the past few years

Benedict is just a senior, he went to a coulple workouts because he thought of going out early. He's projected as a 1st day pick if he doesnt have a drop off his senior year. I know him because I workout with him. He is a complete freak he's been clocked as fast as a 4.7, its 6'6 340, and got clocked at a 4.9 and 35 inch vert at a Jags workout last fall. If he'd stayed at Tennessee he'd be a top 10 pick.

Heath was no where near a bust... he just had problems at UT.

it was the wife and daughter of a big donor if I heard correctly. So Justin, if it was your wife and daughter you'd be ok with it?

Back in the 60's we signed a QB named Jon Covington. He was all everything and was going to break all of the records. We also signed a guy the same year named Dewey Warren not much hype. Covington never played and Warren was the starter for three years and was all conference.

What has happened to Slick Shelley? I remember being excited when he signed with us and he' been a complete bust. Also, Jon Poe and Daniel Brooks broke my heart.

I'd be more upset if a UT player bashed my son's face in with a sucker punch. There was video evidence of that incident. Henderson's alleged wrongdoings were completely heresay.

Poe wasn't horrible coming out of JUCO.

I didn't like the way we used him. He was fine as a backup MLB, but I would have only used him in short yardage situations. He was really big and looked slow. In the 2005 Ole Miss game I saw him trying to cover WR Mike Espy. He got burned a few times. That's one thing that bugs me about Chavis. Sometimes he doesn't cover the other team's best wide receiver as well as he should.
