I have not voted since I turned 18. I have missed the last 2 elections because I could not cast my personal vote for any of the 4 presidential candidates in good faith. I know voting for congress and local positions are important now, so I will be voting in 2016.

However, both the democratic and republican parties bring both good and bad things to the table. Some of the issues are debatable, some are common sense. Why can't a 3rd party or one of the major parties give us a candidate that preserves the good and discard the bad? There are democratic countries that have as many as 6 different political parties on their ballots, but each party has a REALISTIC SHOT at winning the election, unlike here. It's just a damn shame that lobbying has ruined it for everyone.

I am starting to think that these parties will be dissolved within my lifetime, and I'm honestly hoping for it (at this point anyway). Does anyone else agree?

That being said, what would your ideal presidential candidate build his or her platform on? I would want an economically conservative, but socially liberal president. I am against welfare, SS, and other BS forms of government aid. But I also believe that the US NEEDS to recognize gay marriages on the FEDERAL level. Gay couples that are wed in states that allow gay marriage are still not recognized as a wed couple with federal agencies. I know people would disagree with me, but I would want the president to not be religious, or at least actively declare that his or religious stance is inconsequential to their political prowess.

I know this is a stretch, so what say ye, VN?

Because good and bad are subjective in the political realm.

I think you'll see new political parties emerge in your lifetime (I mean, you already have in the last few years), but I don't see the United States having more than two parties with a legitimate chance to win the office of President any time this century.

Yeah, I just think there would have been a lot more fusion candidates at this point. I'm still hoping though. People like to trash the younger generations nowadays, but I think this generation will finally make some major changes in DC.

Soon I hope, the republicans are about to drop the ball on immigration and when they do I will be done with them forever.
The GOP has become nothing more then a weak moderate party and that is not a good balance to the creepy radical leftist party that the democrat party has become.

Oh also to the OP There is not and never will be such a thing as "gay marriage"

Oh, I definitely think that strides will be made and that you'll see some new party routinely win elections on the state or federal levels in certain areas of the country. And I think the impetus for this "overhaul" will be the younger generations.

I just don't think you'll see a real change to the 2-party system for a long time. Having small parties possess 5 senate seats, 10 house seats, various upper/lower state house seats and a few governorships won't be enough to make a huge difference at first, but with time the ball will get rolling.

Ron Paul.

He was a little wacky. I don't agree with his foreign policy. But I feel he could have made a change. Would have helped build a bridge to all aspects of life in our country.

A lot of people who called Ron Paul crazy names and saying how crazy he was/is are now for some reason saying wait, Ron Paul was right. America had the chance for a man like Ron Paul and the fools bought back into the hope and change garbage and whatever the hell Mitt R. was trying to sell. A price will be payed for the choices we as a country made.

As far as the 2 party system there is no breaking it, but both of them can kiss my a$$!

Can't see it happening outside of some type of catastrophic event being the trigger.

Too young to really remember Nixon but he had it going on.

If I recall correctly. Nixon's screw up was the cover up. Not the actual scandal itself.

Funny how folks forget him having about 1400 troops and their families at the white house for a picnic. Troops had full run of the White House. I also believe there were a little over 300 babies born 9 months later. :)

Amnesty will end the GOP. Someone will take their place but I'm not sure it will bring us back to the 2 party system people think we have now

In my lifetime. There will be major changes before I have grandkids.
Unless our country spawns a population capable of critical thinking, overnight, the only major changes we will see in our lifetime will suck. Hope im wrong.

1) The American people don't really have the attention span for more than 2 parties. Most of them don't even pay attention to the 2 primary parties we have. It's all about feeling good and bumper stickers.

2) No knock on you or the OP here, but I seriously doubt this "younger" generation (speaking of those in hs and college now) is going to do anything of consequence. Most I know have an extreme sense of entitlement. If a change comes about because of them, it will only because of the anger borne from what has been stolen from them and from an elephant in the room that can no longer be ignored.

I'm about a decade older than this "younger" generation...but I wholeheartedly admit mine was no better.

Amnesty did not harm the GOP when amnesty was passed during the Reagan Presidency.
Why do you think it will be the end of the GOP now?

I think the GOP will become the party of basically the social conservatives with the majority of the GOP migrating to the Libertian Party.

You want to know when it will change? It will change when people writing on this and thousands of other boards across the country decide to change it. I'm convinced the only way to really change it is from within the political system. We can't or won't change it in the ballot box, so the change has to come from people who are complaining to actually step up and run for office. It doesn't matter what level, as all levels are broke to a certain degree. But, I challenge people on this board to run for something. Are school taxes too high in your area? Run for the school board. Don't agree with some of your city ordinances? Run for city council. You don't want your state to pass legislation on whatever (Obamacare, Marriage etc)? Run for state legislature.

Do it for a couple of terms and make waves, change lives, do something instead of just complaining.

I always vote. The local elections are always the most important to me and I usually vote across party lines. A good example is judges and the sheriff..I could care less about party affiliation.

The two party system will continue to chug along because it was allowed to become the juggernaut in the last century due to deeply divided policies. The only real way to end it that I see is to put an end to career politicians.

Damn, I forgot the NSA is watching me type this.
