This is just a thought but seems like our goverment can't say no. While on the trying to seek the job of president of this great nation of ours questions are being asked on every issue and the one common issue is government will fix everything. "My mother has a illness, how will you help?", "my child can't read, what program will fix this?", "I do not make enough money to feed my family, will you feed us?" I mean when will our leaders wtep up and say get a job, raise your own children, buy health insurance or work it out with the hospitals. It is not the federal goverments job to give us a pamplet to teach us how to wipe our A$$. The debt of the government is the highest it has ever been, and yes before you say anything about the "war" you are probably correct in saying that it has ran the debt up more than anything. But the the overall point I am trying to make is that R's and D's alike are promising programs for anyone who is have any issue with anything and I am quite sick of it. When the govt. become our care taker? Am I alone in this? I want a true candidate to step up and say this has gotten out of hand, we will review our govt. funded programs and cut what needs to be cut and those of you on welfare I strongly encourage you to get a job.

anyways food for thought.

50 years of the welfare state and the subsequent birthing of at least two generations that have grown up believing that the government should take care of them from cradle to grave.

You are correct, this has become a nation of moochers where a middle class white male is a minority and I am tired of it.

As everyone knows, the biggest problem the budget has is entitlement programs, particularly social security. It has to be reformed.

Bush's solution was to create a another entitlement program to provide prescription drugs for seniors.

Great leadership on another issue by Bush.

50 years? Try the entire history of this country. We've been handing out subsidies and other freebies from the beginning. It's how power is obtained and kept. Keep the people dependent on the trough and they'll be your sheep forever.

He also tried to put part of SS into the peoples hands but was quickly shot down. You take the good, you take the bad...

I used to think that when I was an angry 18 year old.

:eek:k:

Now I understand that every thing about politics is about power over someone else.

I was always under the impression that churches for the most part took care of the needy until the depression and the New Deal when the gov't began providing relief.

You can find examples of pensions for 'good mothers', workers' rights and benefits, paupers' homes, paupers' cemeteries all throughout US history. Most towns had a 'poor house' and a cemetery or part of one sectioned off for free burials. Land was often handed out to those with certain qualifications.

Yea that's true especially about land grants. But didn't the gov't take a more prominet role after the depression?

Yes. But the point was that we're not seeing this occur only in the past 50 years. It's gone on throughout our nation's history. It became more prominent because of the Depression. These were designed to protect people and many intended this as something short-term. But as with ANY program, leaders see the power they hold on the people with these. Both parties have taken advantage of this and neither will be the one who pulls the plug on any of these. Once you get these on the books, it will take a massive crisis to remove them. No one wants to willingly give up their power.

Good points.

Welfare programs have been abused to say the least. If I'm not mistaking there is a 3-5 year window a person can only be on welfare, and during that time they have to be actively seeking employement if they are able. I think I remember talking about that in a poli sci class I took.

Government assistance can be all over the place from low to no interest loans, housing, food stamps, etc. And it is not just for the poor. State insurance programs for kids are aimed at the middle class families who don't have health insurance for their children. Even higher up the chain is the farm bill for farming subsidies and other corporate welfare assistance.

But why must we all pay for it? This nation needs induviduals to take responsibility for our actions. Everyone wants something for nothing and when they don't get it they have lawyers to try and get it anyways.

Humans are humans. People will always have it in their nature to blame someone else for their ills or why they got in trouble. People always want something for free. No getting around that. Every country has their welfare cases. Again, it occurs at all class levels and all backgrounds even within political ideology.
