..that Tennessee hired a football coach from outside the program? It wasn't Fulmer, or Majors. I don't believe it was Battle but I don't go back that far. Any help?

Dickey was a Florida guy when he was hired, but did he have any prior UT connection? but I have no idea if Battle had any connection to UT before he was hired here.

I looked it up, Battle was receivers coach from 66-69 before being hired as head coach in 1970.

I am unsure why you're impressed by this.

Considering what he has to work with he's done a hell of a job but let's leave him there. I do not want him as THFCATUTK...

From what I can gather, the answer to my question is Doug Dickey in 1964. So it's been 44 years since we've hired a coach with no ties to the program.

cause this is a team that only won one game in the past two years.

Exactly! They only lost to Miami by like 14 or so, and if i'm not mistaken they scored late in the ballgame to make the score look really worse then what it was and Northwestern they only lost to by like 4.

Georgia Tech is a pretty good team this year, they got beat 27-0 by them,

but to win this many games as a first year head coach is not bad at all!

What a coincidence! 44 is my lucky number...

In a thread about former UT coaches?

Sorry. Misplaced. I meant why isn't he being mentioned as candidate for UT job? Defensive coordinator, done some good things. Would let an o coordinator come in and open it up.

Yeah, and how did that work out?

Oh, wait...

46-15-4 in 6 years with two SEC championships and a Litkenhouse national title, for whatever that's worth.
