When the coaching staff is actually in town

I'm pretty sure that what Kiffin will do with the Vols is what Saban has done/is doing with the pink elephants--brass tacks. You get with the program or you're gone. I think players, when they realize that you are super serious, tend to get with the program. I always thought that Fulmer talked tough but did not walk tough--he was soft, a player's coach--and the Vols have played soft in a lot of ways for many years. Not really on defense--because Chavis really is a much better coach than Fulmer ever was--but on offense (where Fulmer liked to meddle) and definitely on special teams, and with respect to attitude. I hope and think all that will now change. I don't think Kiffin will be clapping his hands every time time a Vol player f-cks up. It's called being demanding. I'd like to see him run the Tennnessee drill once or twice a week in August; I played on a high school football team, and we'd do that drill every three days and we were tough. The Vols did it once every preseason under Fulmer and everyone acted like they were Roman gladiators. Please. Of course if we don't get better play out of our QB and WRs, get a more dangerous passing game, it won't matter how tough we are.

I don't think I have seen this posted but if football players are being told to get in shape and they look up and see a 350 # blob as Fulmer and Chavis versus a slim trim CLK, Coach O and Monte it is probably going to make more of an impact that they practice what they preach. I continue to be impressed with the staff as they appear to be addressing the issues that have prevented success in the past few years. I think we are headed to the top of the SEC again in a few years.

I strongly agree. I just posted this in another thread.

"I would be all for CLK requiring the offensive linemen to all wear wigs and makeup after last year's schoolgirl performance. They should be embarassed."

I think our O-line was weak last year but do you not think a lot of it had to do with the blocking schemes for Clawsens terrible offense???

Some of it was scheming...but most of it was a combination of terrible coaching, and terrible conditioning.

I'm sure that it didn't help things but that is still no excuse for them to be manhandles like that. Also, Adkins seems to have taught terrible technique.

if the players were looking at 60yo men as motivation that might explain how out of shape they were

the staff is limited to 8 hours a week with players during the out of season period....not much time if you are implementing a new system(s). Let's hope, if this event happen, that the players will use their discretionary time to get in & stay in shape.

Not to say this info is not accurate.....

I did not realize that the coaches could have the players out doing stuff like this. I thought they only had so many hours and days that they could do stuff that was organized by the coach.

I know that things can be "voluntary"....yet you better participate.

Am I wrong on this?

That is absolutely true. I was always hopeful that Fulmer would drop a ton of weight during an offseason and set the example for his players and staff. Never happened...I love that our new staff will at least be more FIT on camera on Saturdays. You'd think that would be a secondary concern, but I think it speaks volumes about our program and that we're going to be that 4-quarter football team every down, every game, every year.

I am under the impression that this was part of the limited amount of time they have with the players right now. Seems like the staff is more concerned with setting the tone in the locker room rather than rushing to implement the new system. I trust CLK and company. I'm pretty sure I could coach UT to a winning record with this staff though!

I was talking to a guy I hadn't seen since high school baseball who has been a student manager for UT football these past two seasons. He had funny stories about Orgeron the Destroyer of course (he confirmed that he indeed dips coffee grinds) but he had other interesting info.

He said that CLK and Orgeron had the whole team running hills until many players were puking, to see who was in shape. He estimated that between 10 and 20 players have been told in the past week they are in imminent danger of being cut, either from academics, attitude, or just plain not being in shape. He said he's only heard good things from the players regarding what they think about the new staff, even the ones who are in trouble (Vinson, etc.) are really serious about turning it around.

It was a quick convo because it was on the T bus, but if I get to talk to him again I will post more.

Sounds like they are really getting things shaped up around here. Good to see after all the recent behavior problems and mediocrity from CPF teams. I'm hearing good things all around about CLK and company: recruiting, the continued efforts to complete the coaching staff, and the downlow from the current players.

so you are saying he will cut kids for not being in shape.find that hard to believe.
