I was talking to a guy I hadn't seen since high school baseball who has been a student manager for UT football these past two seasons. He had funny stories about Orgeron the Destroyer of course (he confirmed that he indeed dips coffee grinds) but he had other interesting info.

He said that CLK and Orgeron had the whole team running hills until many players were puking, to see who was in shape. He estimated that between 10 and 20 players have been told in the past week they are in imminent danger of being cut, either from academics, attitude, or just plain not being in shape. He said he's only heard good things from the players regarding what they think about the new staff, even the ones who are in trouble (Vinson, etc.) are really serious about turning it around.

It was a quick convo because it was on the T bus, but if I get to talk to him again I will post more.

Sounds like they are really getting things shaped up around here. Good to see after all the recent behavior problems and mediocrity from CPF teams. I'm hearing good things all around about CLK and company: recruiting, the continued efforts to complete the coaching staff, and the downlow from the current players.

Thanks for the info! :good!:

Glad to hear Coach Kiff is bringing back discipline to UT football.

The first thing I thought about after Kiffin's press conference and some of the subsequent statements by his new staff members was---how many guys are pumped up and realize it's time to take a leadership role? how many guys just resumed their workout routine?

now I hear this---virtually no one had the intuition to get themselves in shape in order to impress the new staff.

I'm disapointed that no one was instinctive enough to figure that out on their own----but I am pleased they're finally getting worked.

Once upon a time, Tennessee played four quarters of football. They won the second half of a game because they out-lasted the other team.

Those days are comin' round again.

AMEN

I remember when I first started dating my wife and made her watch a UT game with me. UT was behind at the half and I confidently told her, "Don't worry, they are a second half team". Sure enough they ended up winning that game.

It hurts that I haven't been able to say that in a few years (at least since 2004)

I know!! It made them even more fun to watch because you KNEW what was coming back out of that locker room after half time. I used to feel so much pride watching them in the 2nd half.

I doubt that no one was smart enough to get themselves in shape to impress the coaches. Their are hard workers on the team. I'm sure EB and some of the rest of the defense was in good shape. Hardesty is a hard worker and I'm sure he was in good shape along with Creer and Poole.

Great point. The only time I've seen our athletes be physically dominant in the last few years was in the Outback bowl against Wisconsin last year. The defense was nasty that day!

I'd say most of those that lost their lunch were O linemen. I've never been as disappointed with a position group as I was with them last year. I blame the S&C coach from last year. Our O line could bench press a house, but they would have trouble running from the front to back door without stopping for air.

I strongly agree. I just posted this in another thread.

"I would be all for CLK requiring the offensive linemen to all wear wigs and makeup after last year's schoolgirl performance. They should be embarassed."

And the Wisconsin fans out lasted the UT fans. LOL I swear they have more fun at a ballgame (win or lose) than any group of fans I've ever seen! My hat is off to them for that. I had a blast just watching them after the game.

They don't need wigs. They were completely unrecognizable as a UT o-line.

I wasn't there but I am regularly disappointed with our fans. We travel well but the fanbase seems old compared to other SEC fanbases. It pisses me off to watch UT basketball games on tv because the crowd is just sitting there watching. We need to expand the student section to include the first 5 or 10 rows around most of the court.

I've suspected the players under Coach Fulmer have never been in as good of shape as with Coach Majors and back. My example, beyond the fact that we couldn't have pushed Marshall County HS off the line of scrimmage this year, comes from the bowl game with Nebraska in January 1998. Cornhusker players basically indicated that we quit in that game and that our O and D linemen were panting and bent over toward the end of the 3rd quarter and into the 4th. I suspect this will NOT happen with Coach O and CMK on the defensive side, and hopefully not on the offensive side either. We have to control the line of scrimmage on both sides this Fall. Enough with the 310 lb. tackles that can't run a 10-second 40.

As much time as our defense had to spend on the field this past year, I think they probably won't have as rude awakening as some will.
