When we start paying for a top 4 team.
I don't think anyone is lucking their way into a Championship from a lower ranking outside of 8

And “we” had losing seasons in ‘77, 80, 88, 5 win season in 78, 6 win season in 82. It was a long road to get to the 1990-2001
Period.
I was there cheering all the way down that long road. I am well versed on our history since I started watching Condredge run around making folks look silly at age 8. Yes the 80’s had it all, the 88 team was young went 0-6 before winning the last 5. Then proceeded to go 11-1 in 89. But no doubt the 80’s produced some exciting times, you could feel us slowly building to the 90’s run. Tennessee had a strong run in the 60’s, once Dickey left the 70’s went into a tailspin. The 80’s saw the slow but steady comeback of Vols having some big seasons. Nothing is easy in the SEC, most all have down times. I’m proud to be a Vol and be apart of a great fan base that represents the great state of Tennesseeand it’s great Tradition!!!!

I would love to see us put our heart and soul and budget into the football program.

no baseball, no mens or women's basketball.

if the devil strolled by and said fire Rick Barnes today and I'll let your football team win three championships in five years Id have to take that deal.

being kind of good at a lot of sports isn't as good as being excellent in football. and if you're excellent in football for a few years you'll have more money to improve those other sports afterwards.

To compete for the playoffs, you have to have an elite QB surrounded by playmakers on offense. On defense, you have to be elite in pass coverage which takes a top end edge rusher, shutdown corners and a speed on the back end. Also, as we have seen in the last few years, you have to be able to control both sides of the line of scrimmage.

The '22 team had the offense to get there but the defense was found lacking. Since that season, just haven't had enough pieces to be a real contender.

The only real college sports that have mainstream appeal are Football and Men's Basketball. Their is a massive drop in interest after that. Even with basketball, most people don't tune in until March and the Tournament outside of maybe watching a few major rivalry games like Duke-UNC.

I would be ok with your post if not for Rick Barnes comment, I wouldn't want Tennessee to treat him that way...

Some of you act like we were tripping over all the NC trophies we have. We had 1998 and had 1951 (1967....no....).

We're an elite program in several ways, but championships isn't one of them. I'm not saying we can't or won't, but I think some in our fanbase thinks we're bigger than we really are.
What are you going by? The school claims 6.

When we luck out and it’s just our year. Honestly it’s gonna take a 25 mil + roster to have a shot with the way things are now
Many who cover the sport believe Texas and Miami are spending near $50 million on their rosters. The right thing to do is to not play when the governing body (NCAA) no longer enforces its own rules. Being one of the few who chooses to follow the rules makes one a fool and an enabler.

As much as I do not like NIL and that it’s causing players to forget the true purpose of college athletics and teaching them about adversity and how to be coachable, it’s here to stay like it or not, we can either sit here and bitch and moan about it or we can adapt, the fact of the matter is we need to adapt because bitching and moaning ain’t gonna get us anywhere. It’s the future and it’s here to stay Danny White needs to open his checkbook and spend some money and if someone takes this to court, a salary cap in the Wild West of college football without a players association or anything, is a violation of the first amendment. So Danny White can either be by the book and follow the salary cap or he can spend some money

We won 3 with Neyland, I do not care what anyone says. Back then they announced the national champions before bowl season and we are still to this day the only team to not allow a single point
UT isn’t the only team to not allow a single point. They are the last to do it, I think.

I'll wait for them to actually do anything in season instead. There's been alot more off-season champions over the years than actual champions. Anyway, we don't play them next year, so I'm not super concerned with how they look in spring practice, no offense to you.

Florida has National Titles in 2006 amd 2009 plus was in Atlanta just in Dan Mullen era.

LSU has titles in 2003, 2007, and 2019 plus other SEC titles.

Alabama doesn't need to be explain.

Tennessee has an empty trophy room since 1998, most compare us to Nebraska. Yes it does hurt compared to them.
Nebraska or Penn St.

Tennessee spent 15 years de emphasizing the football program. What else you call having losers hiring losers? Add to it the NCAA penalties & you have a major rebuild

If you don’t think that program overachieved in 2024, you need to reconsider.
How did they overachieve?

How did they overachieve?
They didn’t have a roster remotely close to the top 10 in the country. The entire 2021 recruiting class for Tennessee didn’t exist for the 2024 team. It was a complete washout. The only player outta Pruitt’s last class (2021) that actually contributed was Jaylen Wright, and he was already in the NFL. The 2022 & 23 classes were severely impacted by the NCAA penalty possibly.

OSU for example had 7 5 star players from their 2021 class playing their senior year that night along with probably another 10 or more 5 star guys in other classes. Tennessee had 4 5 star guys total on their roster. 2 were true freshman (Matthews & Ross) The blue chip ratio had Tennessee at under 50%. That is overachieving.

When Marshall gets here and Peyton bankrolls the NIL single Handedly.
Can you imagine how much Peyton would pay for an o-line to protect Marshall? Not to mention RBs to hand to and receivers to throw to.

Trying to be an "everything school" = less money for football while others are spending double or triple what we are.

Heupel has done a phenomenal job and is a victim of his own success. We are finally stabilizing. Fans need to be patient. UGA was loaded when Kirby took over, same for OSU, Bama. Indiana had a perfect storm where players had been with Cignetti for a long time. That's not going to happen very often.

Also can't play the moral high ground and say Joey shouldn't have been able to come back to give us a better chance and then in the same breath demand a championship with a freshman QB. Not saying you specifically said this part but some have done it.
Georgia was loaded and it still took years for Smart to exceed what Richt had done. Yes, Indiana caught lightning in a bottle and it’s easier to do that than ever. The only reason it happened is the current state of things. However, it’s not a realistic expectation. Let’s see what these next couple years hold. We should have a returning QB in 2027 so hopefully this year will be about development at that position and lining things up so 27 and 28 are special years.
