When is it going to be "our turn" again for Football?

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Go Vols!

Some of you act like we were tripping over all the NC trophies we have. We had 1998 and had 1951 (1967....no....).

We're an elite program in several ways, but championships isn't one of them. I'm not saying we can't or won't, but I think some in our fanbase thinks we're bigger than we really are.

Watching the success with Basketball this year, a year where we have overachieved, I keep wondering when is it going to be our chance in Football. 0 Playoff wins, No SEC titles in the 21st Century, and no real years that I feel like Tennessee has overachieved other than that special 2022 team.

It has been so long. I think Heupel is the right coach. I am NOT excited about this season as it screams rebuilding year. I think bringing in Jim Knowles could pay dividends. The recruiting is getting better. However, it is draining seeing our rivals: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, etc. having top level success (well Florida hasn't recently but the Tim Tebow era was at least this CENTURY).

It is draining. Looking at what Rick Barnes has achieved, what Tony Vitello achieved, etc. I just keep waiting and hoping.

Our school is a Football school, we cut our teeth there. Yet, it has been one of our weakest sports in the 21st Century. In fact, the two sports that Tennessee has had the most historical success at: Football and Women's Basketball, are Tennessee's weakest programs right now.

The SEC getting its teeth knocked in by the B1G in Football regularly might help Tennessee as our rivals all are starting to struggle/show weaknesses. Sounds like the NIL era hasn't been good to the SEC.

Hopefully, something good is coming soon...
The SEC teams thought that NIL was great; especially UT. Turns out that it wasn’t great for the SEC. There’s a heck of a lot of money up north.

We actually went 47. No one recognizes 1967, it's an embarrassing claim, made all the more embarrassing by the fact that Georgia won the Litkenhous national championship in 1968, but doesn't claim it.
True. Weird times back when the championship was issued prior to bowl games. Leading up to the blow game they had the same record as USC , though USC did have a win over their one common opponent UCLA.

I amend my prediction to 2045 which is actually probably much more realistic

Possibly. Rumor is Ohio State went into debt to assemble that team from 2023 that won it all and that is the reason there was this who push about the Private Capital Firm and tier list.

Indiana has a decent NIL but a lot of it was just good team building by the coaching staff. Tennessee (and a lot of the SEC) hasn't figured out that recruiting and developing freshmen isn't the way to go anymore. You need to build senior-laden teams with transfers. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt were the exceptions in the SEC functioning more like Indiana.

Tennessee will always usually have the worst timed pick 6, scoop and score, procedure penalty, muffed punt, missed field goal etc…in big games. Hell, our 2022 win against Saban was a partially blocked field goal 😆. It’s just the way it is. Tennessee just isn’t a championship school. But I love’em.

Don’t think we will see it anytime soon. Maybe I’m down cause of the bball today, or baseball getting swept by Vanderbilt, or us being projected at 6.5 wins in football.

Danny is good at raising funds, even Hamilton was good at raising funds, but none of that matters if you’re getting skulldrug in games that matter.

Keep recruiting like we currently are and I’d say we will be right there in the football final four hunt in another two years and probably stay there for a magical brief five to six year bit…..that’s about the way this usually works around here….

Most who remember the 90s, don’t have a clue how long it took to get back there from the late 60s-early 70s.
We had a some good teams in the 80’s. 85 and 89 were top 5 teams and National contenders. We also beat bama 4 straight from 82-85. That set up the 90’s decade. GBO

We are closer in football than we have been in some time as a program. Last year didn’t go as well as expected but Heupel has now had 2 good recruiting classes in a row and while being selective has plucked some pretty good players from the portal. I think our football upturn in overall competivness in the top half of the sec starts this year. I think this team has a lot of Sophmore-Junior hungry talent. If we can get good quarterback I think we can be a dangerous team to deal with. I think the defense is going to be better and get even better as the season goes. I feel that way about the offense as well. Our O-Line should be stout. If we can stay fairly healthy and our Dline and secondary can step up and play solid we could surprise a bunch of folks. GBO

And “we” had losing seasons in ‘77, 80, 88, 5 win season in 78, 6 win season in 82. It was a long road to get to the 1990-2001
Period.

We won 3 with Neyland, I do not care what anyone says. Back then they announced the national champions before bowl season and we are still to this day the only team to not allow a single point

Also it’s worth noting most of our claims which this isn’t a good stat, predate the AP poll announcing national champs

And most of our claims are reasonable (unlike Auburn) and remember I say MOST not all

I really do hope you are right, but there is a lot of "if's" there. I do think Heupel made the right decision in getting rid of Banks and bringing in Knowles and the new S&C coach. I think however to compete for championships, we have to recruit better, shift focus more toward portal players.

I don’t have the an answer, pragmatically I want to say it should be our time soon, have we ever gone this long without a SEC championship in football?

With that being said, obviously our best years recently were the Fulmer years. During most of Fulmer tenure, the SEC was a 2 team league between us and UF. Beat UF and you were in the drivers seat (other than 2001).

IDK. I am still just happy that my team can go and beat almost anyone on any day. Don't like the crazy melts we see a few times per year, but I am happy just being in the CFP hunt atm. Maybe a low bar for some but that bar was at the bottom of an endless pit for a long time. Being a consistently good team is a good place to be.
