I've always thought Fulmer and Cut were a great team, but neither one is as good without the other. Fulmer could never find another OC that he had 100 percent trust in, and whose strengths as a coach complemented Fulmer's weaknesses.
If Cut had been with us this season, he would have gotten Fulmer to pull the plug on Crompton earlier, simplify the offense and salvage something from the season. And we would have won at least eight games and Fulmer would still be coach.
Back to the original topic, the main problem was recruiting. In the 1990s, Fulmer had DuBose at Alabama, Donnan at Jawja, DiNardo at LSU and other assorted nonentities all around the league. He and Spurrier mowed everyone else down and decided the title between themselves. Spurrier usually won, but Fulmer made the most of it when he finally broke through.
