The Challenges of Painting Neyland Stadium

The first challenge this project presents is the deadline. The project has a very tight schedule that is dictated by the University’s football schedule. The stadium must be ready by the first home game.

The second challenge is containment. Because the project is for only specific sections of the stadium, the entire area where sandblasting and painting is occurring is being wrapped with containment tarps to protect the surrounding areas.

CIP is currently ahead of schedule on this project and we should wrap everything up well before the Vols first home game on September 3rd.

Sand blasting half of Neyland and not finishing the job? Pure incompetence.

We got a guy from Ohio located in Dallas worrying about work being done in Knoxville. :ermm:  :eek:hmy:   :tease2:  :glare: :rtfm: :focus:

When I visited Neyland in '11 during the offseason the stadium looked terrible and I didn't even know if they were renovating it or not, but that worked out so don't panic...

Scratch that, without pics from the OP I was unclear on the progress. Apologies for the misunderstanding. Allow me to explain the process:

Because of time constraints, they are just painting the underside from the side of west press box to the jumbotron this offseason. That roughly translates to section PP next to the boxes to KK under the videoboard. That work, which was scheduled to be completed in two weeks has finished. Next offseason, they will paint the remainder of the underside of the south end, along with the jumbotron structure.

The project is part of a larger repainting and cleaning in the stadium that is a multi-year project. Other areas in the stadium, including some concourses, suites and stairways were painted this summer.

Because of temperatures, they can't start painting until April, but the O&W game pushes that to the last week of April/first of May. Prep on pipes and electrical work was done and they finished the prep work the first week of May. It takes about two and a half weeks per section to treat, sandblast, treat again, and finally paint the exterior. Any inclimate weather extends that. The areas underneath the painting have to be turned over to the concession and souvenir vendors the first week of August to prepare for the open practice and season opener.

So, with that timeframe in mind, there was no way to complete the entire end in one summer without doubling the cost by hiring a second crew and the additional machinery. Had they known that the weather would have cooperated as it has, maybe they would had contracted for an additional section, but the entire south end still would not have been completed. Any sections past KK require different equipment because of the topography of the surrounding area.

Next May, they will roll that equipment and finish that end and another list of projects.

No job as huge as painting and building maintenance for a stadium as large as Neyland gets done in one year. They follow maintenance schedules developed during original construction and these are now tracked on software. From painting down to replacing HCAV air filters and the gland packing on water main valves. All down on the calendar.
