He was a very successful recruiter for us years ago and is apparently doing the same for UGA........

Other than recruiting, what is Garner's role at UGA? Is he worth consideration for our openings?

It would appear that our upside potential would be more attractive because Richt isn't going anywhere soon.....

Garner is very good at what he does, but according to who you talk to, he's also been hard to work with at a couple of schools. Some people blame Garner. Some people blame other peoples' egos. Who knows?

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

Positive or Pro Garner: UT recruiting hasn't been the same since his departure

Negative: Some indicate that Garner's recruits were preoccupied with NFL success, and made cohesion on the team difficult

Personally, I would rather have Garner and deal with the negatives associated for obvious reasons.

In the end, it was nothing more than a big political rift.

Fulmer did a good enough job of letting his jealousy of Garner poison their working relationship the first time around. There will be no reunion. Remind me again how many championships Fulmer has won without Rodney Garner's recruits playing starring roles.

Yeah, Coleman, Grant, and Lewis just killed the cohesion of the '97 and '98 teams.

I think you are probably right, but there are similar stories from Auburn and even from UGA where he reportedly took a swing at Jim Donnan.

If my calculations are correct that would be zero...wait I didn't carry the one, oh it is still zero.

The same Jim Donnan that Barry Switzer punched out during Orange Bowl preparation at OU? The same Auburn staff that consisted mostly of guys who are now selling insurance or doing TV?

It is hard to discount the idea that Garner was beginning to get too much credit for Phil to handle. No question about it.

These issues do seem to follow RG everywhere that he goes. That being said, I would much rather have him than anyone currently on staff.

I never said the sources were especially upstanding. :p

There's no doubt that Garner has mega-contacts especially in Georgia . . . but at the same time he's recruiting a talent rich state for an in state program that is winning.

How much was that program winning before he got there?

That's because Richt is more concerned with winning championships than he is with trying to horde praise for himself.

I never realized being a panzy was required to win championships.

But I guess if it worked for Jimmy Johnson...

Exactly. We used to get more than our fair share from the state of GA. Now we are fortunate to get the UGA rejects...........unless, of course, their father played for UT...

Garner hurt us bad. We have never fully recovered from his departure in my opinion. Trooper will be another blow. Garner is happy in georgia. There were some bridges burned back then and like hat said there won't be a reunion. It would be nice to start picking the best out of georgia again though.

Don't you guys think Phil's position (security) has changed since Garner left??? If he is as good as I hear, isn't it time for Phil to be a man and reach out to the guy? He can't be making the money at UGA they we could pay.......

Sure money can be a cureall. But garner's a smart man. He would have to work alot harder here than at georgia. But make him the right offer and he may think about it real hard i bet.

UGA is one of the most successful (financially speaking) Athletic Departments in all of college sports. They can pay every bit if not more than UT can afford.

Rodney Garner leaving left us screwed for the next decade, Trooper might screw us for the rest of the recruiting year.

However, UGA can't sell him on the possibility of becoming the HC......We are all stuck with Richt until HE wants to leave.

Don't even know if he is qualified but I guarantee Fulmer will be gone before Richt!!!

with the way Fulmer talks, Garner can become an HC somewhere else by sticking to what he's been doing. Replacing Fulmer is not a huge selling point IMO because Fulmer has mentioned staying around for quite some time.
