What's more important for 2018, Play Calling/Scheme or Player/Team ability?

I have seen alot on the forums about the 2 deep roster, key players on offense and defense, and season projections leading up to the start of the season. Not many have commented on the importance of fitting our scheme to our players ability levels or developing a style of play that makes us competitive with elite level programs. We have seen how badly things play out with talented players and lack luster coaching decsions and game planning under CBJ, so which is going to have the most impact for the 2018 season for the VOLS?

I am of the mind that the best althletes in the world cannot make plays and win games if they are not in the best postion on the fieild or are in the wrong scheme.

I honestly think the most important thing is growth. For all of Jones' tenure he under developed players. So everyone says. We need to see growth from these guys as fans to know that for sure was the truth. Or else Jones has an escape boat that he wasnt the issue. In my mind that man never needs to lead any program again. Now that we have an actual coach that the players will bleed and walk through a wall for. I want to see our players developed into the recruiting classes we have seen the past few years. We should not ever look like a 4-8 team. Much less actually be one. Somehow it seems like a long conspiracy since Fulmer was fired with all the former rivals coaches and graduates being in charge at UT. Two things I never thought I would see in my life time. UT football and women's basketball being irrelevant.

Phillip Fulmer used to enjoy saying, "it's not the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmys and Joes" (and sure, he was quoting someone else who said it first; that's not the point).

After last season, I think we can all agree that even with good Jimmies and Joes, you still need good Xs and Os to succeed in the modern Power 5.

So yeah. Both.

I would absolutely love to see our players grow from placeholders a year ago to play makers in game 1! Not only does that make a statement about CJP being a great coach and his ability to make good player great, but it would absolutely discredit all the BullS*** that CBJ spewed after every loss that we shouldnt have taken.

Both is incredibly important. You can have talent at positions, but if they don't develop and mature the other teams players will. Then the losses start to pile up.
