Everyone is focused on Simms and Bray after the game, but it seemed like the real story of the UT/Georiga game was the Defense or lack there of.

Going into the Georgia game the defense was rated:

#73 Pass Defense
#75 Run Defense
#78 Total Defense

NCAA.com ? The Official Website of NCAA Championships - Football

That was probably the worst performance by the defense this season and those numbers are gong to be a lot worse this week.

UT had a better then average defense last year with Monty as DC. Seems like the wheels came off.

We had a "better than average" defense last year because we had a future NFL HOF DC.

justin wilcox is a great DC, he just isn't used to playing SEC teams. Reality is that we just don't have the players this year...

Our defense is terrible. Oregon, UAB, and GA proved it. Fla and LSU was more of a lack of offense on their parts and not our defense.

1. We have a lack of bodies at DT.
2. Chris Walker is not playing to his potential.
3. LB's are slow and can't cover pass routes.
4. Defensive schemes are puzzling like having DE's out on pass routes.
5. Inability to effectively blitz.
6. Two former walk on's started today. Our best CB was a WR last year.
7. The offense doesn't stay on the field long enough to give the defense a rest.

Biggest problem I see is no pass rush. I watched the USCe and Bama game, USCe got to the quarterback almost every play, I dont know the exact number but I think we can count our sacks on one hand! We have to get pressure. We need to recruit some stud DT and DE I think thats where the defense starts. We are so bad, GA qb had all day to throw! TN staff need to put to emphasis on getting some D line!

Apparently a great defensive coach from the WAC can't adjust to the week in and out of playing top tier teams every week.

I am sure that people will get on here and say that youth is a problem, but I would have to say the talent level at UT vs Boise should be higher and have more athletes.

Time will tell.

Are you saying that Boise St. could run the table with an SEC schedule???

While it should be noted we don't have the horses this year...the jury is still out on Wilcox. I want to give the guy a chance, but guys were out of position all day and tackling/fundamentals have been an issue all year. I haven't seen any strokes of genius from him yet.

I think the issue with sacks someone brought up is true.

UT is 107 in sacks. 117 in sacks given up.

It's hard to create a work of art when all you've got is half a pack of dull crayons.

No. I am saying that just because he was a great defensive coach in the WAC, does not make him a great coach in the SEC.

His record at Boise for those 4 years would not look that good in the SEC-If Boise played in the SEC.

The biggest question on this years team is how good is defense or offense. Both are not close to average. If the offense or defense is in the top 30 then they would be decent. Outside the top 50 forget it. I now say that this will be be lucky to win 4 maybe 5 games. The last 6 are: Bamaq, South Carolina, Memphis, Ole Miss,Vandy and Kentucky. How many wins? two maybe 3 if we're lucky. Let's be honest people. To me Memphis is a sure win, hopefully. How will the Vols fare against Vandy and Kentucky? It has been years, and not sure how long ago, maybe back in the 50's or 60's that the Vols won less than 5. This is a very young Vol football team. I htink they can be competitive by 2012. I'm still a Vol fan regardless of whether they win or lose. There have been some heart breaking losses and some AWESOME wins over the last 3-4 decades. A true fan will stand by their team through thick and thin. Look at it this way, we were lucky to beat UAB who ran the Vols all over the field. UCF just recently ran all over UAB. This makes us look bad. Hang in there.

Which is why his current defense is worse than ours and 99th on that list. OVERRATED...
What he's doing right now is irrelevant to me. I know what he did here and I know what he did prior to coming here.

Trying to deny how great he is(was? I dunno) is foolish.

Agreed, I was just expecting more from a schematic point of view. Again, guys seemed to be out of position all day today and I haven't really seen a fired up defense yet this season. Even in the first half, it seemed like guys were just going through the motions.

I like Wilcox, but all the woes on defense we have seen isn't strictly due to lack of talent. The UAB game is exhibit A. I will agree talent is the primary contributor though.
