Well we all clearly saw some OL problems. So in all the wisdom of VN what would you do to fix it first thing Friday morning for this season?

I'm hoping it's just a lack of focus and preparation BUT I have my suspicions.

I know there's a lot out there on different threads but I wanted to start one to discuss what the sages here think we need to do.

If you have the nation's best O line coach already on staff when you arrive, keep him.

Lol. Number one. Maybe recruit other than white offensive lineman?

Number two. Not be scared to make changes? When someone is ass, they are ass. Staff was scared to play jack jones and hall last year and look what happened

Replace Thomas with Jones for starters. Can't be any worse.
Garnish Mahoney's wages
Hourly mtgs with trainers on getting Chance Hall back
Have Thomas go by financial aid office to figure out tuition costs going forward

Serious question - just what exactly was App State doing last night that made it difficult for our offensive line? I refuse to believe they were just getting physically whipped - there is no way that is physically possible over a 60 minute game given how undersized they are.

I dont know if they are poorly coached in practice.

Playcalling would help.

A reluctance to throw the ball on Appy State when they are giving 10 yard cushions and you are trailing the whole game makes no sense.

And dont give the vanilla argument. There are a whole lot of of vanilla pass plays in the playbook.

Playcalling yesterday looked like Debord placed heavy money in Vegas on Appy State

They were simply way to fast for Coleman Thomas to handle. The same move beat Thomas time after time. Playing slow will bite you

Whatever it was, you can bet that all of our future opponents will be doing the same thing.

Introduce the Center to the weight room. If he lifts weights, you can't tell. The rest of them just don't appear to be very talented. They looked like a bunch of drunken, middle-aged, hammered, slow-pitch softball players who were overly-stuffed from pulled pork and mac n cheese.

Agreed on this "well, we were vanilla" narrative that is going around. Vanilla should have gone out the window at halftime.

The reluctance to throw even with big cushions shows how little faith this coaching staff has in Dobbs despite what they say. They do not trust him at all to make throws. After last night, you can see why

Appy State did a good job of blitzing and then disguising their blitzes and dropping 8 into coverage...

They also came with the Bear 46 D against us and Dobbs didn't get us out of the play....I don't know why--I don't know if the coaches don't want him to audible or if he just isn't good at recognizing the blitz....either way--it's disappointing...

If you watch our Sugar Bowl win over Miami way back in January of 1986--you will see many similarities to what Appy did to us last night....they gambled all game long....

The MAJOR problem that cost us was that Thomas just flat out got his azz whooped all game long--and that NT was able to get pressure in Dobbs' face....

I don't know why we didn't have a guard earhole him at the snap on passes to slow him down...but you would figure that Thomas should be able to handle him....

I'd actually run rollout passes and read options and make Dobbs something the D has to watch.

I don't believe Dobbs has to be a big-time downfield passing threat. I think he just needs to be a threat to do anything in general. He was not last night, mostly because he was confined to the pocket almost the whole evening, and when Coleman Thomas (who I agree needs to be replaced) is getting his sh*t kicked in sitting in the pocket isn't going to help.

I think Butch needs to provide the O-line with a healthy dose of this...

Hard to blame Azzani when his guys get very limited opportunities to make plays.

Yep, I agree with this. People keep getting on the WR coach, but his guys are making plays when they have the chance to.

The problem is we don't throw to WRs at all, and Dobbs is continually kept in the pocket, where he's not so great.

When Dobbs rolls out, good things happen, either on the ground or through the air.

As a coaching staff you have to make people accountable for poor performance. Our center and at least one of our OGs should be replaced as starters for the Bristol/VT game. That message has to be delivered or expect similar performances from our OL overall. Not saying don't play or start them later on for other games, but the center of our OL did not have team 120's back IMO and they need to pay a toll to get back where they were.
