Well, if we beat Cal, UF, and UGA I bet UT's first loss won't come until the SECCG against LSU or possibly USC in the NC.

I hate to dispute the sunshine patrol that thinks we're poised for a national championship, but I'm not nearly so optimistic. To be honest, I think that our best shot at winning a game in our first three tries is going to be the Florida game. I think Cal will be hungry and looking for revenge, and I think that Southern Miss is a classic trap game in between Cal and Florida. I would project that we'll be 1-2 after the first three games, but I would not be completely shocked by an 0-3 start.

Cal and Southern Miss will be tough games, but please don't tell me that you think that it should be easier to get a win against the defending national champions at the Swamp than to beat a team that we beat by 17 last year or a Conference USA opponent? :mf_surrender:

Actually, you're quite pessimistic. Opinions are like anything else yet there are some which are more qualified than others. We have a much better chance of beating Cal than we do Florida, but we can win both games and that isn't being overly optimistic. It is reality. Cal just doesn't have the speed and physicality across the board to beat us unless we help them with turnovers or the PAC-10 refs lean their way some. Florida basically lost their entire defense. History shows us in big time college football that usually that means some stuggling the next year. USM will be tough, but I WILL BET the house we win that game. I will completely shocked if we are 0-3. We have a better chance at being 3-0 than 0-3, but what is most likely is 2-1.

I'm a little surprised that most people think UT will get by Cal, Florida, and Ga, to be undefeated or lose to SC.

i'm with ya. as much as i think SC will be pretty good this year, i gotta think that if we are good enough to beat FL, Cal, GA, Bama etc....that we can also handled SC at home.

so for me.......@ FL stands out as the first loss.

Hey, I want to be clear that I would love nothing more than for us to go 3-0--I'll be rooting for it big time. But at the same time, I'm not one for blind homerism either. I know that we southerners like to talk about how much more physical we are than those commie-bastard PAC-10 folk. But the truth is that Cal wasn't at all prepared for the Neyland experience last year, and they'll know what to expect this time in the Peoples' Republic of Berkeley--not to mention that our players will have the same "we killed them last year so this one will be easy" mentality as you have. I think the Cal game is the toughest of the first three.

As you correctly pointed out, UF's defense will struggle early in the year (which is why UF is the first defending champ in a while not to be ranked in the top 5)--so I give us a shot in that one, although I think that Pee Wee Herman's coaching gives UF the nod over Fulmer. And while I think that we should beat Southern Miss under normal circumstances, I think that game is in the worst possible spot on the schedule--it scares me.

No blind homerism here. I am just saying 3-0 is more likely than 0-3 between those two scenarios. I don't think our players will have that mentality against Cal. Many new faces and I know our coaches won't allow that attitude. That being said, Florida is still a much tougher opponent than Cal, IMHO.....and based on some facts and historical data.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that point--I think Cal would beat UF on a neutral field this year. Not sure what "facts and historical data" you're referencing, given that neither of these teams has played a down yet. UF has an almost brand new defense and a QB that has thrown only a handful more passes than Jim Bob Cooter.
