Last week I gripped about the defense, and honestly, they'd deserved it over the play they'd shown over the last few weeks. However, Saturday They made me look like a monkey and played about as good as any defense I've seen at UT. They should be congratulated.
One of the things I was debating in my head last week trying to figure out what was wrong with the defense is blaming the talent, coaching, preparation or what. This week shows that it's not talent and it's not necessarily coaching or preparation. I think it's motivation. As far as coaching the game, that's not necessarily a component. However, I believe it is absolutely the head coach's responsibility.
The Georgia game was the 1 and only game this year that Both our offense and defense hit the field and played like they were mentally ready to play the game. They played like they wanted to win and as a Georgia buddy of mine said, the blood is still behind that woodshed.
I don't think our talent is less than other teams and honestly I can't imagine that our coaches knowledge and instruction of the game is less than any other team's. In fact I would say our talent level is on the high side as well as our knowledge of the game.
This leave motivation as the problem. For whatever reason we seem to have a problem getting the team on the same page and giving a 100% effort to win the game. It doesn't take many slacking in their position to shoot the team in the foot against a motivated opponent. A couple offensive linemen not putting out 100% of their ability, a kicker slacking, or a QB trying to slide by and the whole team might as well take a knee.
I believe the head coach has a major responsibility to see to it that his team wants to play the game when they hit the field. If our defense is capable of playing the way they did Saturday, they should have done the same the other 11 games this year. If our offense is capable of what they did against Georgia, they should have done similar the other 12 games of the year.
If CPF has a fault, it's inability to motivate his players.
