So, how in the world does the UNC athletics director go out and hire Bill Belichick in a week?

What exactly were we doing when we hired Dooley…….Jones……Schianoooope……Pruitt? Hell, at one point I was even thinking ol Phil was about to get his job back.

For the record, I’m perfectly happy and content with what Coach Josh has done for the Vols. Just blown away that they were able to pull that off at UNC. Do we have an official list of coaches we interviewed since 2008? Surely none of them were anywhere close to as high profile as Belichick….

It's totally different than when we were in the wilderness. (Although it's well documented how bad leadership was here and what a mess it was) With NIL and portal, guys like that are more willing to do college ball. Also, he wanted them to name his son CIW, which Spurrier and Pearl have tried before with schools. Many places would consider that a deal breaker. He apparently burned bridges with the NFL so if he wanted to coach again, it was going to have to be college ball. think it's going to be a mess.

He may end up sucking…. May not be able to relate
I’m not suggesting he’s going to turn UNC into the next Alabama, but with this new playoff, you essentially just have to be better than Clemson and Miami to make the ACC champ game. That doesn’t seem too difficult. Just interesting how poorly we were ran up until Danny White showed up in Knoxville.

It's important to remember that the process of hiring coaches isn't as simple or obvious as it looks. The agents have all the power, and you have to play by their rules. You don't look at the landscape and say "we want so-and-so." You go get on your knees in front of Jimmy Sexton and ask him who he has available for you to consider. He'll give you some choices, and you'll either pick from those or you won't be doing business with him and everyone he represents. Sometimes - a lot of the time maybe - the power agents aren't going to make the guys you want available. They're intended for other jobs. It's all part of the plan.

Oh, but he’s no Dooley, Jones, or Pruitt lmao. Those clowns are middle school coaches compared to Belichick….
What point are you trying to make? Read through the post and you are comparing two different periods of College football. You seem to leave out Kiffin as well. How many ADs did we have during that period? God awful period and has nothing to do with the UNC hire. Desperate people do desperate things, UNC is desperate and so is Bellichick.

Belichick views the North Carolina job as a short term gig as evidenced by the 3 year $30 million dollar contract that he signed.

Belichik is just setting his son up for his future in football here. BB will coach a few years then retire and hand it over to his son

Unique set of circumstances here that the Vols did not enjoy in our coaching searches. Would be kind of like if Vince Dooley came to us and said I want to coach the Vols but I want Derek to take over when I retire.

Can only hope BBs kid is better than Dools was here.

I read that was part of his contract. Reportedly they will be contractually obligated to hire his son as head coach when Bill retires regardless of his son’s record.

Pretty sure they are paying him 10 mill a season right out the gate with no college coaching past right? That’s how they pulled him… also I’m shocked at the move as at 72 to be accepting a head coach position in college football with all the challenges .. if he isn’t 90 after the first season we’ll u can color me surprised.. srry but this ain’t gonna succeed

Stop living in the past, man.

The coach we have now? He was hired in less than a week. And is a faaaaaar better college coach than Bill Belichick.

Go Vols!

I leave out Kiffin because he was a bit of a splash hire, but the only one. And sir, we were desperate people, too…..and we never seemed to land our desperate Belichickish attempts (Gruden?).

I'll be surprised if he's there past 3-4 years. There's very few coaches that are successful at both the college and NFL levels. Look at Saban, he's probably the best college football coach of all time...definitely the modern era, and he sucked as an NFL head coach. The rosters and mentality are completely different. There's no way that Belichick, with zero personality, can relate to those 18-19 year old kids today.

Like Deion, Belichick is a gimmick hire. Yes, it will grab headlines. Yes some recruits will be attracted to play for a Superbowl winning coach. But Belichick is 72 years old and his surly ass will not like recruiting high school kids and dealing with NIL/portal drama. Plus Tom Brady aint walking through that door again! This reminds me of when Bill Walsh coached Stanford after retiring from the 49'ers. It'll have a similar impact.
