What time last year did transfers start coming in?

Less people are leaving this year so less opportunities to bring some in. Add to it the 5 scholarships reduction Tennessee is taking over Peabrain Pruitts stupidity. Staff is looking for quality this year.

So does that mean that we can only take 27?

Last year was quite a thrill.

Will it be same this year?
I think as with early and late signing period there needs to be a portal signing period So teams can manage their rosters. Tough thing now is if you jump on all the early guys, best I recall there were some late portal guys last year...so it’s probably smart to leave a spot or two open

When was Tennessee penalized 5 scholarships?

Hooker was officially transferred January 7, 2021, three weeks before Hoople was hired. McGrath got here beginning of February. The rest were Spring/Summer spread between April through July.

I fear an unwarranted meltdown when the reality sets in that we may not get many, maybe any EXTRA pickups through the portal. Don't know if we are trying to cut both TOTAL counters to 80 and INITIAL counters to 20 or so this cycle or not. Can we officially cut INITIALS by offsetting portal losses meeting the criteria or do you have to exhaust your 25 before you can use those "extras"? Not sure there is a shell game there to play or not. Sure seems we are posturing to get the NCAA decision behind us as soon as possible with cuts this cycle and upcoming final roster for 22'.

With LWS stating that we're actually 2 over before Baron and Beckwith, we're at the limit now. I have no idea how we're going to bolster our roster AND self impose a reduction in 'ships this year and still hit the 85 number especially if this staff isn't going to run anyone on the roster off to make room. Having said that, somehow, someway, they always seem to find a way to make the numbers work. Kinda like finding quarters in your sofa cushions. Somehow you always seem to find one or two.

Not sure in todays world if we will have to run guys off or if we will still see some bolt on their own. Success rates of those in front of them may temper some of these voluntary portal entries. Some guys may simply agree with their post season status and prefer to move across or down to get on the field somewhere. Probably see a couple of guys jump in we as fans value as well and trigger some entertaining dark posts. It is that time of year.

From what I understand, they are not required to cut initial counters, and the scholarship reduction only applies to the 85 limit. Now, if they were to go over the 85 by taking a full class, then they would have to process guys to allow for the full class of incoming players. However, I do not think that is presently the case, because of how low our roster numbers were to begin with.

Where do you think our roster numbers are today? Thought we were still at the 85 with our 21 new counters AFTER Barron and Beckwith entered the portal. You have different numbers?

I really don't have any idea, but that just seems surprising. If we had about 71 scholarship players prior to the seniors leaving, and there were how many seniors on the roster?

I guess that doesn't account for players electing to return for a final super senior year, which if Hubbs is to be believed, will actually count against the roster in the coming season.

I don't know, it could very well be that we have a numbers crunch. I guess that is just interesting to me because everyone bitched and moaned during the year about how low our numbers were. Now, all of a sudden, we have too many players and need to process guys.

Does that make sense? I don't think I've done the best job explaining my thought process.

Can’t we get 31 this year

If I have interpreted the tea leaves right on this site right now we top out at our 25 normal INITIAL COUNTERS.

We still have about 8 guys in the portal, several committed to or leaning to other schools but as of today not one has proven to be academically eligible and enrolled in a D1 school. For every one that does, when he does, we could apply a transfer IN from the portal over the 25. It is just now time for actual enrollments to become official at lots of schools. I guess it is possible some may not become official till after spring when guys clean up their academics and the the schools can reclaim additional counters as well.

OF COURSE we can only ADD a mix of both types till our total COUNTERS equals 85, or 80 if in fact we or the NCAA is imposing scholarship reductions in conjunction with PRUITTGATE. We all played the we lost 30 to the portal last year card so much we assumed it was a no brainer that we had room for the 32 max. Not the case. Like most schools, the COVID extra year has guys turning their 5 to play 4 into 6 to play 5 and messing with standard schollie timeline math. Every guy that officially files for entry in the portal does give us the OPTION to take back that counter if we don't renew them. Other departures and those going on medicals can also create COUNTER space but not additional transfer replacement slots. Some guys may not want to invest their time to be on the practice squad next season with some walking away with their degrees and others transfering down, etc., whether that is now or at the end of spring. It is a process.

How many spots do we have after adding the recruiting class but deducting Seniors, Mays, and the two departing transfers?
