I think that's the safe play. Please don't look too much into what websites consider a 5 star or a 2 star. Everyone here could pick out a 5 star. Trust me when I tell you that so much goes into a scholarship offer that Butch just didn't wake up and say "I'm feeling generous today!"
for the short time I was at ESPN, Tom Luginbill was the best I've ever been around. Knows what he's talking about, he's professional and what I liked the most about Tom is that he isn't full of himself.
Bob Lichtenfels is the best kept secret in football recruiting. Was with Scout for a long time and I think he's with 247 now. Great eye for talent and garbage.
A couple others don't have internet sites for public. John McCallister in Ohio is very good. Randy Rodgers down in Texas is one of the best and if Donnie Zimmerman from National Preps told me a kid could play or couldn't play, I'd listen.

Luginbill is the best in the business IMO. Also, definitely agree with you on Bob Lichtenfels...knows talent.
Bob is great. Loved working camps with him. He is very good and as a former coach and player he knows what he's looking at.
I think if Bob put all of his time and effort into it, he could be one of the best in the biz.
However, 247, Scout & Rivals consider a good recruiting analyst as someone who can write 20 stories a day.
Bob isn't one of those guys. Like me he wants to watch film and evaluate. Not write the same ole' run of the mill recruiting story.
I think it's a shame some of the best at evaluating talent get overlooked by some simply because they aren't churning out 20
articles a day. Watching film and breaking down talent is where it's at IMO.
the websites are great, and I subscribe to many. I read the stories but as soon as I see evaluation, I stop reading.
Those sites are great for telling me when Jalen Hurd went into the hospital, what he had to eat after surgery, when he left surgery, when he pulled back into his driveway.
Stars and all that, I don't pay any attention to. If I want a scouting report, I go to ESPN RECRUITING NATION and see what Luginbill has to say.

I think the OP is on target with this one.
A coach/staff gets a chance to view a kid's skills up close and personal for a week while at camp. If they see a spark, they then go watch the kid perform in a couple live games. If that confirms their suspicions and he meets their 'off-field' requirements, offer the guy regardless of stars. That seems like the definition of recruiting versus chasing a guy simply because he's gotten some scouting press. I like the 5*'s as much as the next guy but that doesn't mean anything less than 4*'s is a bum.
