Predicting ANYTHING is pointless with this staff.

Trust the staff, get the best players we can, and build this program back.

In Butch I trust.

Welcome aboard Moseley!

I think that's the safe play. Please don't look too much into what websites consider a 5 star or a 2 star. Everyone here could pick out a 5 star. Trust me when I tell you that so much goes into a scholarship offer that Butch just didn't wake up and say "I'm feeling generous today!"

Out of all the so-called experts on the net there's only 2-3 that I will go read a scouting report from. The rest couldn't tell you a shoulder pad from a maxi pad.

Exactly, Butch is the antiCoker with how he hates recruiting services. He should only trust the eyes of himself and his staff.

for the short time I was at ESPN, Tom Luginbill was the best I've ever been around. Knows what he's talking about, he's professional and what I liked the most about Tom is that he isn't full of himself.

Bob Lichtenfels is the best kept secret in football recruiting. Was with Scout for a long time and I think he's with 247 now. Great eye for talent and garbage.

A couple others don't have internet sites for public. John McCallister in Ohio is very good. Randy Rodgers down in Texas is one of the best and if Donnie Zimmerman from National Preps told me a kid could play or couldn't play, I'd listen.

Luginbill is the best in the business IMO. Also, definitely agree with you on Bob Lichtenfels...knows talent.

I think the OP is on target with this one.

A coach/staff gets a chance to view a kid's skills up close and personal for a week while at camp. If they see a spark, they then go watch the kid perform in a couple live games. If that confirms their suspicions and he meets their 'off-field' requirements, offer the guy regardless of stars. That seems like the definition of recruiting versus chasing a guy simply because he's gotten some scouting press. I like the 5*'s as much as the next guy but that doesn't mean anything less than 4*'s is a bum.

I agree. It is hard to tell how good this guy is by his film, but if he has the tools, he definitely has the size, and grades are in good standing, I like the pick up. It is all about evaluation, development, and getting the most out of the players they sign. Welcome aboard Emmanuel!

Bob is great. Loved working camps with him. He is very good and as a former coach and player he knows what he's looking at.

I think if Bob put all of his time and effort into it, he could be one of the best in the biz.

However, 247, Scout & Rivals consider a good recruiting analyst as someone who can write 20 stories a day.

Bob isn't one of those guys. Like me he wants to watch film and evaluate. Not write the same ole' run of the mill recruiting story.

I think it's a shame some of the best at evaluating talent get overlooked by some simply because they aren't churning out 20
articles a day. Watching film and breaking down talent is where it's at IMO.

the websites are great, and I subscribe to many. I read the stories but as soon as I see evaluation, I stop reading.

Those sites are great for telling me when Jalen Hurd went into the hospital, what he had to eat after surgery, when he left surgery, when he pulled back into his driveway.

Stars and all that, I don't pay any attention to. If I want a scouting report, I go to ESPN RECRUITING NATION and see what Luginbill has to say.

Same here...journalists with a job as "recruiting experts" are excellent for recruiting info, but for scouting reports/evaluations it's best to go to a true expert/analyst like Luginbill for the meat and potatoes.

I don't know a whole lot about recruits. Heck, I don't even like to watch videos. I think all playmakers take it to the house, the videos aren't good enough to see footwork or whatever on the big uglies and every qb can sling it. I say this to say that for me, recruiting is just a hobby to see how many stars we get. Outside of that, this Moseley guy seems legit. He's fast. If he's fast, can cover, then he'll make plays. I think this guy is going to be coachable, and will make a difference. For me, this is a solid, solid pickup. I happy for him and I am really happy for Big Orange Country. We got a good one!

After potential, a player is determined by work ethic. Even then, a lot of kids go under the radar... I was reading about Clay Matthews the other day. He wasn't recruited by pretty much anyone, walked on at USC, didn't get a scholarship for 2 years and didn't start full-time until his senior year, then went 1st round. Which brings me to my next point, a little off-topic, but Matthews is 6'3 240 and runs a 4.65 40, almost exactly AJ Johnson, yet Johnson is "too slow".

I did notice the Moseley kid has a 3.7 GPA, so I'm sure that plays into it as well. Seems like he fits the "high character" mold that CBJ preaches.

I generally like getting higher-ranked recruits. Is just a bit more soothing. But, I agree, nothing is absolute as you point out.

Look at Cam Sutton. How often do you see 3* true freshman on the field, game one, a la Berry, Janzen Jackson, and Bryce Brown. Unless for a play or two on ST's, it usually doesn't happen. Now, don't take this as a comparison to them; my point was just that if you see a true freshman on the field, they're usually a blue chipper, but nothing is absolute.

Wow, didn't see this one coming! Besides the Berry twins I thought we were done with recruiting DB's. I still feel like we need about 2 more D-Linemen and maybe one more O-Lineman. This is a very interesting commitment. Not highly rated but obviously our staff sees something in him.
