They rarely recruit even modestly elite. Yet they perform. How tf can we not even match them? Odom was a DC in Memphis. The answer is he was given time. And I guess he took knowledge from Pinkel. Wtf can’t we be like them?

They rarely get 4* s. How do they get nearly all their unheralded recruits to perform better than expected? I don’t get it. And the highly rated recruits are nearly always successful.

I think it all comes back to culture. Also they tend to have low expectations. Everyone expected them to come to the SEC and compete with Vandy and UK for the bottom, but they are far from it.
I don’t know that they have low expectations. I think they had a chip on their shoulder. That’s what I’d have. They came in to prove they belong and they did. I think that’s still their motivation.

Truth is they do great at 2 things. Finding players that are fully committed to getting better and willing to redshirt ang grow and a few higher rated recruits that always perform to expectation. It’s crazy how much of a positive to be patient and earn your spot. We have none of that

Right now....they have players not in the top 500 of their class earning defensive player of the week and top 20 offensive and #1 defense in the SEC. they are top 12 in SEC rated classes performing top 8 classes.

They lost to Wyoming. I dont anyone here has that as the goal.

Do you know the numbers of that game? Two plays lost that game. They had over 509 yards of offense. Turnovers settled the score. How did we do against Georgia state? Was it similar?

Why are you bringing up GSU? That is not a defense in your lauding of Mizzou. Wanting to be Mizzou is hardly a worthwhile goal.

Wyoming would probably beat the **** out of Georgia state. Who hasn’t? (Besides us)

I don’t want either I want us to perform as we’ve recruited. We bitch about players that are on paper better then most

In the five years before they joined the SEC they had won: 12, 10, 8, 10, and 8 games. They’ve been doing more with less for a while.

I remember Arkansas playing them in the Cotton Bowl after beating #1 LSU in 2007 and underestimating them when they had Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin just because we played in the SEC. They won 38-7 and shut McFadden down. Not sure how they keep doing it, maybe the players they get from Missouri are underrated by the services?

Not sure I get your points. Dont believe the ultimate goal for most UT fans is to at least look good while you're losing.
Point is to accept a game or two as bad and be able to grow and improve and by the end improving enough to have a successful season. #Improvement

I'd say part of the difference is you're discussing a program that went thru a smooth transition from one coach to another versus a program constantly dealing with firings.

Well, I don’t think it was smooth for Odom. He was close to the fans wanting him fired. He did not perform well at all the first couple years. They could have fired him. But given they are a very average program, they wouldn’t be able to improve. Instead they backed him and here we are

It was smooth in the sense he was coming after a guy retiring that had things running smooth. Not taking over from a firing.
